Chapter 4 Paternity Test
- CORRIE
- "What is that slut doing here? You brought your ex wife in as Herod's tutor?" Mimi's voice echoed, bouncing back and forth in the room.
- My back was pressed beside a partition wall, hidden from the both of them with my red heels in my hand.
- Mimi had pulled Devon to a corner and I immediately asked the maid for the restroom and snuck in to eavesdrop.
- It wasn't hard finding my way around, I after all, used to be the mistress of this house.
- "I didn't know Miss North was Corrie North, she's not the only woman with North as a last name Mimi." Devon's voice grew louder, frustration laced in his voice.
- "I don't give a fuck. She's not tutoring my child. I bet she doesn't even have a licence. We need to call the police." Mimi whispered her voice heavy with panic.
- "What for?" Devon asked.
- "She's here to kill my Herod after she killed her own son. Don't you understand Devon she's here to ruin everything I've worked for." I almost laughed, kill my own son? she's still spreading that crap? And what did she fucking work for?
- I was the one who made Devon who he was today, every single prosperous fruit was from my labor, not hers.
- I tilt my head getting bored of their argument as I tiptoed away from the partition. I made a pause, my eyes casting over to Herod who just stood there and watched me, not even uttering a single word.
- I was nervous, I didn't know what he was thinking or how I would diffuse the situation if I got caught. Getting caught wasn't an option, I waited four years for this, my patience was had already worn thin.
- I crotched down to his position, his eyes moving down as I squat.
- "Hello Herod." I whispered softly in the most sweetest manner.
- "What are you doing here?" I uttered quietly in the most audible tone I could muster.
- He was mute still staring me down.
- "Which class are you Herod?" I asked.
- "One." He muttered.
- "You're in pre school one?" I muttered as he nodded. Shoving his hands in his mouth.
- I pressed my hand on my chest.
- "I'm miss North. I will be your tutor." I said as he nodded.
- "Will you, Will mommy love me again?" He asked and to be honest I was quite impressed by his diction.
- I squint my eyes shut as I smiled brightly.
- "Of course. That's Only if you're a good boy." I pushed his nose, making the eractic noise of a button. He smiled faintly as I rise up with my shoes in my hands. I run my other hand through his hair, ruffling his crown as a red blush blossomed on his cheeks.
- "Herod, Get away from her." I froze in my steps as Mimi runs to pick up Herod, backing away from me like I was some killer
- "Devon call the police right now." Mimi screamed, looking insane checking if I'd hurt Herod.
- "Mimi calm down. Herod is fine. I'm sure Herod was looking for us and she brought him over." Devon said, making things easy for me. As always, making excuses but for once it benefited me. Mimi looked over to me with my heels in my hand.
- "She was eavesdropping in our conversation—"
- "Mimi, enough." Devon raised his voice and judging from things this may been Mimi's first time getting yelled at.
- "You're irritated and you're tired, just go to your room." Mimi retrace her steps slowly with Herod in her hands as she whisked around and walked away with Herod.
- Herod made a little wave at me as I returned the gesture.
- "Herod likes you." Devon mentioned the obvious. I turned to him, putting on a tight smile.
- "It's not that difficult to be friendly with children." I hissed. I guess he wouldn't know because Herod was obligated to like Devon, that was his father.
- "How have you been? Where have you been all these years? I searched everywhere for you but it looked as if you disappeared from—"
- "I'll start tutoring as from tomorrow. The interview has been concluded." I said coldly cutting off Devon purposely, my voice grim without emotion as I walked bare feet.
- "Should I drop you off? We should catch up." He persisted, ignoring my cold hints that I wanted nothing to do with him.
- "No need Mr Remington, you're married after all. I don't think your wife will tolerate us having such a relationship."
- I could see the battle of confusion in his eyes when I addressed him formally.
- I haven't even begun a single part of my plan and he already had that dejected look.
- "I'll be off." I dropped my heels to the floor and wore it and immediately made a brisk turn for the exit.
- I feel it, his stare on my back as I left him. I made my way to the living room as the from maid gives me my purse. I remember more than four years ago, Devon wouldn't let me have maids at home, he would make me clean the entire mansion and tend to him and Haven. But Mimi gets staff to take care of everything. It's almost laughable.
- I left the mansion, called an Uber, it was a long drive but I finally got to my apartment complex. I shut the door behind me and dropped the massive purse by the door.
- I walked to the other side of the park to my white board.
- A picture of Mimi, Herod, and Devon.
- I picked up one picture of Mimi with another man checking out of a hotel.
- The more I look at him, the more Herod looks like him. I put the pin the picture on the board. Stepping back to see my investigation coming on nicely.
- I took out a piece of hair I plucked from Herod when I patted his head earlier, that I had carefully hid in my pocket.
- I
- took out my phone and dailed Hatty's number. My eyes glued to Mimi's picture.
- "Hello." She answered.
- "Hatty, I need you to help me carry out a paternity test."
