- Visiting my mother hadn’t been a planned decision. The thought came unannounced, bubbling up while I sat, overthinking as usual. You might wonder why. Most people I know speak of their mothers with warmth—pillars of comfort and affection, the first place they run to in times of despair. Mine had always been the opposite.
- Sometimes I questioned if she was truly my mother at all. Her past was darker than any shadow, so vile that if reflected in a mirror, you'd spit at the image. But even with all that, she was still my mother.
