• I clutched my stomach exactly where she had punched me. I hadn’t expected that kind of power in her arms. The hit rattled my insides and gave me a sudden bowel contraction.
• “Where the hell have you been?” Lyra shouted, and I caught a whiff of alcohol on her breath. “You’ve not shown up to work for days, and now you think you can just stroll in and start again without my permission? No letters, no messages, no notes—nothing! You just disappeared, and you didn’t even bother to tell me why. That’s not fair, Blake.”
