Chapter 7 Divorce Papers

  • James did not expect Alex to be the one who hit his wife.
  • The woman was utterly dumbfounded when she saw James begging on his knees. “What is wrong with you, James? Why are you the one kneeling?”
  • Even Ms. Winston couldn't bring herself to believe what was going on.
  • “What's wrong, Daddy?” Benny Langdon asked while tugging at James' arm.
  • However, James didn't dare say a word for fear of angering Alex even further.
  • “You get up right this instant, James!” the woman shouted furiously. I thought he would teach this punk a lesson, but he just got on his knees the moment he saw him! This is so embarrassing!
  • “No, you should kneel too! Mr. Jefferson is not someone you can afford to offend!” James snapped back at her.
  • The woman went wide-eyed with shock and disbelief. “W-What did you say?”
  • “Did you not hear a word I said? I told you to get on your knees and apologize to Mr. Jefferson!”
  • Scared out of his mind, James grabbed his wife by the arm and pulled her onto her knees.
  • Alex has Jack, the wealthiest man in Nebula City, at his beck and call! I can't believe my wife offended him! I asked Mr. Sawyer about Alex earlier. He didn't tell me much, but it was enough for me to know that Alex is a terrifyingly powerful man!
  • That was when the woman finally realized what she had done, and her eyes filled with fear and resentment.
  • “What are you waiting for? Hurry up and apologize!” James shouted angrily.
  • The woman reluctantly lowered her head and said, “I-I'm sorry!”
  • Noticing no response from Alex, James shouted again, “Say it louder and with sincerity!”
  • The woman broke down in tears and sobbed, “I'm sorry! I shouldn't have been so unreasonable earlier! Will you please forgive me?”
  • “Next time, remember to keep your mouth clean when you're out and about!”
  • Alex shot the woman a cold glare before holding his son's hand and walking out of there.
  • Although the woman was angry and frustrated, she didn't dare say a word in response.
  • It wasn't until Alex and Stanley had left the kindergarten on the electric scooter that the two got back on their feet.
  • Ms. Winston was still frozen in shock and confusion as she watched from the side.
  • W-What just happened here? Why would James be so scared of Alex? Isn't he just a live-in son-in-law at the Jennings residence?
  • “James, you'd better provide me with a proper explanation for what happened today! I won't let this rest until you do!” said the woman with a vicious look on her face.
  • “What the f*ck is wrong with you? Why would you offend that guy?” Having knelt twice before Alex in the same day, James was feeling a lot worse than his wife.
  • “Who is that guy?” The woman's voice grew a little softer when she saw how angry he was.
  • “He even has Jack Sawyer acting subservient to him! That's all you need to know! Remember to behave yourself whenever you're around him and his family! Either that or avoid them altogether. Also, stop insulting him about his wife!” James snapped at her impatiently and walked out the door with his son in his arms.
  • Even the wealthiest man in Nebula City fears Alex?
  • That was when Ms. Winston finally understood the situation.
  • “Looks like I'll have to be nicer to Stanley from now on...” she mumbled to herself.
  • Heather and Carmen were home when Alex returned with Stanley.
  • “I want to change my last name to 'Jefferson,' Mommy!” Stanley said as he ran up to Heather and tugged at the hem of her shirt.
  • All three of the adults froze in shock when they heard that. After taking a moment to regain their composure, Heather and Carmen glared daggers at Alex.
  • Carmen leapt to her feet and jabbed a finger at Alex as she shouted angrily, “What have you been teaching him, you piece of trash? You're nothing but a live-in son-in-law, Alex! You have no rights in this household!”
  • Heather simply stared coldly at Alex without saying anything.
  • They believed that Alex must've taught Stanley to say that.
  • While Heather didn't really care if Stanley had her last name or Alex's, she was disappointed and dissatisfied with Alex's behavior.
  • Using a child to get what he wants? Just how immature can he get?
  • Alex took a deep breath and said, “It's only natural for a child to have his father's last name. Besides, I didn't teach Stanley this at all. One of his classmates insulted him because of his last name today. I don't want him to have to put up with such insults all the time, so I think it's better if he changes his last name.”
  • “Do you think you're qualified to have him take up your last name? Since when have live-in sons-in-law enjoyed such a privilege?”
  • “That's their problem, not mine.”
  • Smack!
  • Carmen slapped Alex hard across the face and shouted furiously, “You're nothing but a worthless piece of trash in this family, so you have no say in Stanley's last name! If you make him bring this up again, I will slap your teeth out of your mouth!”
  • Alex felt his blood boiling with anger, but he kept himself from retaliating because Carmen was Heather's mother.
  • “There won't be a next time. Let's just get divorced as per our discussion earlier today,” Heather said coldly with a snort as she fetched the divorce papers from the bedroom.
  • “Sign them, and we'll get the procedures taken care of at the Civil Affairs Bureau tomorrow,” Heather continued with an icy-cold look in her eyes.
  • Alex was trembling all over when he saw the divorce papers in front of him.
  • I've loved her and given her everything I had for five long years, and this is what I get in return...
  • The sight of Heather's cold and distant expression hurt Alex's heart deeply.
  • He took the divorce papers over and was about to agree to it when Heather's phone rang all of a sudden.
