• “Where is Lilac?” I asked him at once, only to be met by his shocked expression as he raised his head to look into my eyes.
• “Lilac? She’s not here…I fired her…just like you asked.” Confusion swirled in the man’s eyes while dread settled in the pit of my stomach, fear holding my heart in its icy fingers as I turned and bounded up the stairs to the house, going straight to the attic where there was a tiny room at the very end, which had been Lilac’s residence for the past four years.
