• I was not allowed to see Alex. For a moment, I stood, astonished. In my period of anger, I had driven to his office with the sheer intent of seeing him and skinning him alive. I’d forgotten that I was just known here, that I was practically a secret.
• Edward didn’t introduce me to his job because he didn’t want people to know too much about me; he just wanted to keep me at home as the perfect wife while he worked and inaugurated his sons into knowing working life. So it was perfectly normal for the receptionist to immediately see me and turn me away. They probably thought I was just another female aiming to meet Alex.
