  • It was silent in the garden, and all I could hear were the chirps of birds as they flew by. Isabella cleared her throat beside me, pulling me back to reality. I blinked and looked down at my hands, which were open on the table, holding the cutlery. I glanced up, scanning everyone’s faces.
  • We were seated in the garden for dinner, the lights in the yard casting a warm glow and giving the place a Christmassy feel. Normally, I would have loved this setting—I used to—but things weren’t the way they used to be. Not anymore.
