Chapter 5

  • “I can.” This was the first time someone doubted his capabilities.
  • “Pei Shaoyu, my child needs a father. He needs to grow up in a happy family, full of love and care. Can you provide them all?” He Nian tried to persuade him. She knew better than anyone how it felt to grow up in a broken family, how much pain and hurt it inflicted.
  • She wouldn’t want to give birth to this child because of his temporary hot-headedness.
  • Pei Shaoyu gazed silently at the woman in front of him, the woman who gave off a sense of maturity when she spoke.
  • They stood still in absolute silence as their brains churned to think of ways to persuade the other party.
  • She wanted to discourage him.
  • He, on the other hand, wanted her to confront him and solve the problem without any prejudice.
  • “The Pei family will take full responsibility,” Pei Lihua’s voice broke the silence as he spoke in a calm tone while standing at the parlor entrance.
  • He Nian could be as clamorous as she wanted when facing Pei Shaoyu, but when it came to facing Pei Lihua, her demeanor took a 180-degree turn.
  • Pei Lihua strode across the room until he was a couple of steps away from them. His eyes had a similar shade of brown as his son, but with such intensity that it made He Nian tremble slightly. He continued speaking, “That child belongs to the Pei family. Needless to say, our family will take up this responsibility, including my son. He must learn about the responsibilities he should bear as a man!”
  • Oh god... just kill me now.
  • He Nian felt like God was pulling a prank on her. Just a minute ago, she invited her boss to her wedding banquet. Now, her boss was going to become her father-in-law.
  • All because of this damn brat! Her eyes glared furiously, shooting daggers at the little brat standing next to her.
  • Yet, Pei Shaoyu paid no attention to her and turned to his father. With a frown, he asked, “What about mother...?”
  • Pei Lihua glanced at him without uttering a single word. He then spoke to He Nian, “Nian, don’t you worry. Since Shaoyu did it, I will make sure he takes up this responsibility. The Pei Family will never treat you badly.”
  • Pei Shaoyu had a frivolous look in his eyes. For some reason, he had a feeling that his father was very satisfied with his future daughter-in-law.
  • Sure enough, Pei Lihua added, “I believe that Shaoyu’s mother will be extremely pleased when she hears about this.”
  • He Nian flashed a stiff smile at Pei Lihua. Deep down, she was not happy.
  • But facing Pei Lihua, she didn’t dare speak out.
  • “Father, are you sure mother is alright with this?” Pei Shaoyu was still worried.
  • He Nian’s eyes beamed with hope as she glanced at him expectantly. She was hoping to hear Shaoyu’s mother would disapprove of this arrangement.
  • But instead, Pei Lihua answered, “Yes. You, of all people, should know your mother’s condition. She’s holding on just to watch you start a family.” A hint of melancholy flickered across his face at the mention of his wife. This made He Nian even more anxious than she already was. She stayed quiet in fear of making an unforgivable mistake.
  • ...
  • As she walked out of Pei Lihua’s office, He Nian could feel the piercing glances of her colleagues. She held her breath. The only thing she could wish for was meeting Pei Shaoyu’s mother and hearing her reject this marriage.
  • “Are we going to meet your mother now?” He Nian’s eyes were filled with anticipation.
  • Seeing through her plan, Pei Shaoyu couldn’t contain his laughter. Haha, her wishful thinking is going to disappoint, he thought to himself.
  • “Yes, we’re going to see her now.”
  • He Nian was reveling in her thoughts. She couldn’t wait to meet his mother and stage a show of how she wasn’t allowed to give birth after being rejected by her.
  • As soon as Pei Lihua came out, the group headed straight to Ren He Hospital.
  • It was as if fate brought He Nian to this hospital. This was where she found out she was pregnant, and also where she made the appointment for an abortion. Now, this hospital was where Pei Shaoyu’s mother was recuperating. To her, it was more than convenient since she could go straight onto the operating table the moment she was rejected.
  • They arrived at the medical room shortly after. While waiting for Pei Shaoyu’s mother to come over, He Nian sat nervously on the sofa. Just as she was wondering how the conversation with his mother would go, a frail woman in a wheelchair was pushed in. She was Pei Shaoyu’s mother, Cheng Xue. And before He Nian could say anything, Cheng Xue held her hand and plundered her with questions enthusiastically; her attitude overwhelmed He Nian.
  • No. This isn’t right.
  • This isn’t supposed to happen!
  • Shouldn’t she be complaining and disagreeing when she saw me?
  • Why is she obviously satisfied with me?
  • He Nian shuddered at her thoughts. Cheng Xue, who was next to her, asked softly, “Nian, did the doctor say anything about the baby?”
