• Endless solar days stretched on, each one a test of endurance for the other children, who found themselves cooped up in the cramped confines of their wagons. The sounds of laughter and play that might usually fill the air were replaced by an oppressive silence, as the weight of our circumstances pressed down on us. The clan’s leader, Jakilum, had taken to following my father's routine. It kept the group moving toward our destination. The resting time was the same as that of father and me had it before, which allowed the Equus caballus time to rest, giving us the chance to move around, eat, and, if we wished, rest.
