Chapter 3 No Bridesmaid Needed

  • “Did you hear that, Raphael? You've got to eat your breakfast in the future, okay? You always say you are busy and never ate the packed food I prepared for you.”
  • Those words felt like a pail of cold water dumped on Elena. She lifted her head suddenly and accidentally met an indifferent and piercing gaze that made her heart beat wildly.
  • She once thought she could remain calm even if she met him again.
  • After all, it had been seven years, a total of two thousand five hundred and sixty days. She thought time could harden her heart, no matter how deeply in love they were in the past.
  • She thought she could be unbothered.
  • She even thought she had no more feelings for him.
  • To Elena's surprise, hearing Vanessa complain about Raphael skipping meals made the former feel conflicted. On top of that, his icy and distant gaze made her heart ache as if a knife had pierced through it.
  • Is he not eating Vanessa's packed food because of the promise he made to me?
  • Elena was still holding on to such a hope.
  • “By the way... Elena, are you listening to me?”
  • Vanessa's attractive voice traveled into Elena's ears.
  • “I have something to tell you. Our wedding is next month. Can you come? We were once best friends, after all. I'd like you to be my bridesmaid.”
  • Those words were so sudden that they took Elena aback, rendering her unable to give a response. Her body tensed under the white coat.
  • Just as she twitched her lips to say something, Raphael spoke in a cold tone, answering on her behalf. “We don't need any bridesmaids at the wedding as long as we have you as the bride.”
  • He shifted his gaze and eyed Elena in contempt. “Dr. Truman, are you going to stay here and watch my fiancée and me showing our affection for one another?”
  • His sarcastic words shattered the final hope Elena had.
  • Elena stiffened. Without realizing it, she glanced at the man on the bed, who had a chilly expression and pursed lips.
  • I should've known that hate and disgust were all he felt about me. How could I be so foolish to think he still has some feelings for me?
  • Elena balled her fists in her pocket.
  • Seven years ago, he once told her, “I'll only eat the breakfast you make in this lifetime.”
  • He also said, “Elena is the only one who'll be the bride at my wedding.”
  • However, seven years later, Vanessa had become his “only one.”
  • Elena was on the verge of losing control over her emotions. Using her final ounce of mental strength to hold herself together, she said calmly, “Well, I'm quite busy with work, so I won't be attending your wedding. Anyway, a nurse will be coming in to replace the IV drip in a while.”
  • Before officially losing control of her emotions, she capped her pen and walked away emotionlessly, suppressing the pain in her heart.
  • Crash!
  • The moment she turned around, the sound of a glass smashing rang in her eardrums.
  • Elena halted her steps for a second before stepping out of the room. She looked incredibly miserable.
  • He probably wanted to throw the glass at me.
  • Looking grim, Raphael watched the figure leave in a hurry, subconsciously balling the fist that had an IV drip. Blood flowed from the needle and onto the bedsheet.
  • “Don't be mad, Raphael. Elena's your attending physician. I can get the director to switch her out if you're unhappy about it.”
  • After stepping out of the emergency room, Elena went straight to the restroom and confirmed there was no one else in there before locking the door. She then leaned against the door as if she had lost all her energy and allowed herself to bawl her eyes out.
  • Her chest throbbed terribly. She pressed down hard on it, but it did not relieve her of the suffocating pain.
