Chapter 15 Always Forgetting Her Umbrella

  • The one who had spoken was Elena's younger sister, Cindy. They were three years apart.
  • She looked extraordinary even if she were to say nothing while leaning against the door with her arms crossed.
  • The woman was said to possess the most beautiful face in Aploth a while back, and it wasn't long until she began appearing on many large subway billboards and in fashion magazines. Cindy Truman had undoubtedly made a name for herself in the past two years.
  • “The audacity of you to even come back.” Unfortunately, she didn't look as pretty anymore from the moment she opened her mouth.
  • The woman stood there calmly while gazing at Elena with a sneer. “If I remember correctly, someone had sworn they'd never set foot inside the Truman residence again.”
  • Elena's grip on her bag of goods tightened. She couldn't refute her sister.
  • She was young and rebellious back then, and it was only until becoming a mother herself and knowing what it felt like to see one's own child slip up that she realized how difficult things must have been for her parents.
  • “I came back to see Dad, Cindy. Is he doing okay?”
  • “Thanks to you, Dad had to be hospitalized for half a year before finally coming around.”
  • Upon hearing that, Elena was filled with so much remorse that she wanted to dig herself a hole and hide inside it. “I was wrong.”
  • Cindy scoffed, “You? Wrong? Nonsense! You're the center of the earth, and everything revolves around you! Let me tell you this now: the Truman family can't afford to keep a big shot like you. Since you decided to leave seven years ago, don't come back and stir up trouble again.”
  • Unable to stand Cindy's comments, Ruby chimed in, “Ms. Cindy, Ms. Elena was also—”
  • “Don't defend someone just because they're part of the family, Ruby,” Cindy interrupted. “She's the one who got Dad sick in the first place.”
  • At that, Ruby could only turn to Elena with a troubled look.
  • Elena had no intention of starting a fight, so she simply put the gifts down. “It's okay, Ruby. I'll be going now. Here are some gifts.”
  • Yet, as soon as she walked out of the courtyard, she heard Cindy's voice ring out from behind. “I can't believe she'd leave all this trash here. Throw everything out, Ruby. The further, the better.”
  • Elena merely clenched her fists, forcing herself not to look back.
  • She knew her sister's temperament all too well. She's not a bad person. She genuinely hates anything deemed bad, so it's no surprise she'd feel this way about me because of what happened to Dad.
  • Dark clouds began to cover the skies. It was going to rain, as the weatherman had predicted.
  • It didn't take long for plump droplets of rain to suddenly fall onto the windows of a black Mercedes-Benz speeding along the road.
  • The driver, Levon Lefevre, slowed down as he noticed a slightly frustrated look on Raphael's face. “It looks like it'll rain for a while. Thank goodness we've been using this road for the past few days. We'd be stuck in traffic if we used Lakemount Road.”
  • For some reason, Raphael had instructed the driver to take this current route to work since last week, even though taking Lakemount Road was supposed to be more convenient.
  • The light pitter-patter turned into a heavy storm as the car stopped at the traffic light. Then, while Raphael gazed out the window, his pupils suddenly constricted.
  • Across the road was a disheveled-looking Elena running under the rain toward the bus stop with her purse over her head, and she was now drenched from head to toe.
  • She's still always forgetting her umbrella, just like before.
