• “First rule of girls’ trip,” Rosa announced, snapping me from my thoughts as the sleek, silver jet came into view. “No checking work emails. Second rule, we try every spa treatment on that list.” I smoothed the itinerary held in my hands which Matteo had taken care of. “ Third rule, we talk about everything except the men in our lives.” She smirked, a gesture full of knowing irony. We both knew that was a rule destined to be broken. I laughed and nodded in agreement.
• Keith handled everything with quiet efficiency, loading our luggage, speaking in low tones with the pilot, and a smiling, formally dressed flight attendant named Bella. As we boarded, Rosa gasped with delight at the cream leather seats, the rose-gold fixtures, and the chilled champagne awaiting us.
• Rosa’s chatter filled the space, an enthusiastic antithesis to the silent presence of Keith in the seat a few steps away from us. I watched the city recede as we took off feeling a simultaneous lift and tug at my heart. I still felt doubtful about Seth’s approval or intentions.
