Chapter 4

  • Roy Holden’s POV
  • I drove Amber with me back to Maven’s place so that we could plan how to go about the wedding and then think of how to move our lives forward.
  • We were walking into Maven’s home when Amber’s phone started ringing, “Who is it?” I asked, turning to face her and wondering if it’s her parents calling. The last thing I want now is anyone ruining my plans to marry Amber. She is the woman I love and she is carrying my child in her tummy.
  • “It is Susan,” Amber replied, taking the call. I blew a short sigh of relief knowing Susan posed no threat.
  • “I am with Roy now and we are at Maven’s place,” I heard Amber say into the phone, I guess Susan must have asked her where she was. Me and Maven waited for her to get off the phone.
  • “I called Susan earlier to tell her about my situation,” Amber said after she dropped the call.
  • “It’s okay,” I told her, reaching out for her hand so that we could go into Maven’s house. I need her to relax and get rid of her worries. I want to do all the worrying for her.
  • “Did she say she is coming?” I asked afterwards, leading Amber into the house.
  • “Yes Roy, she is on her way here.” Amber replied.
  • “Good, because she has a role to play at our wedding,” I said, flashing a smile to Amber. She smiled too, even though it wasn’t as bright as it used to be, I was happy to see her smile.
  • “Where are we going to live?” Amber asked after taking a seat in Maven’s parents' huge living room. Only the size of my parents living room was bigger but it was still well furnished.
  • “I am going to find us a house to stay in after our wedding, we can stay in a hotel for now until I can arrange for a house,” I told her.
  • “What?” Amber said, her brows a little furrowed and I knew what she was going to say next.
  • “You do not need to worry, Amber, I have some savings, enough to take care of us until I find a job,” I said, taking a seat beside her and taking her hand in mine to try and ease her worry.
  • “You do not need to worry about staying in a hotel, Roy, you can stay here for a few days, my parents are out of town, remember?” Maven said, which sounded like good news because it would save me some cash.
  • “Oh, you see, we can stay here,” I told Amber, glancing around Maven’s living room. “Thanks Maven,” I told Maven.
  • “You're welcome.” Maven replied, flashing me a smile.
  • I have lived a lavish life and had little savings because I had a good paying job at House of Jakes industry and had parents who could easily give me money. Choosing Amber has cost me my Job and comfortable house which does not matter anyways.
  • “I think Susan is here,” Maven said, leaving Amber and me to go and check outside, I think he heard something.
  • “Tell me what happened to you, Amber, I could barely hear you on the phone earlier,” Susan said walking up to the couch where I and Amber were seated, she is looking glamorous as always but still, Amber is more beautiful than Susan.
  • “You called her before me?” I asked, turning my gaze to Amber and pretending to be mad that she called Susan first. I know Susan is her best friend and she loved her very much, but I sometimes wonder if Susan loves Amber as she claims she did, especially when Susan would want to talk me out of continuing my relationship with Amber and have her instead.
  • “You do not have to be mad, Roy, Susan is my best friend and she is going to be my maid of honor, right?” Amber said, turning to face Susan.
  • “Yes…” Susan said, glancing from me to Maven, looking rather confused by Amber’s statement, I guess.
  • “Amber and Roy are getting married tomorrow,” Maven said almost immediately, filling Susan in.
  • “What, so soon?” Susan asked, wearing a shocked expression, like she never wanted it to happen.
  • “Yes, Susan, it’s happening tomorrow,” I told her, pulling Amber onto myself. “She is going to be my wife tomorrow, and you and Maven here are going to be the best man and maid of honor at our wedding,” I added, feeling happy and excited.
  • “What about your parents?” Susan asked, gazing from me to Amber.
  • “Come on Susan, we need to make preparations to marry these two tomorrow,” Maven told Susan. “I will fill you in on the way,” Maven added, gesturing to Susan who reluctantly turned and followed Maven.
  • ***
  • I stood beside Amber who was wearing a white dress and a veil over her head. She was looking as beautiful as ever even though her dress wasn’t as glamorous as I had wanted. The wedding is just a simple wedding with three people present. Our best friends, Maven and Susan, and of course the priest who is going to officiate the wedding.
  • “What is taking the priest so long?” I asked, glancing at my wrist watch and wondering why the priest was taking so long to come.
  • “Are you sure you made the arrangement correctly?” I asked turning my gaze from Maven to Susan who had made the arrangement on our behalf.
  • “Relax, Roy, the priest will be here soon,” Maven replied, gesturing for me to calm down.
  • “I am sorry Amber,” I said, slipping my arm under her arm as I saw her lowering her gaze. She must be missing her parents or thinking whether she was making the right decision.
  • “I am sorry, this was not the wedding I had in mind for us,” I told her, taking her chin so that she could look at me. I can see tears clustered around her eyes but she must be trying not to let them fall.
  • I can hear her unspoken thoughts and I know that she was hurting even though she isn’t saying anything.
  • “Are you sure you are making the right decision? Look it’s not too late we can put an end to this?” Susan said, causing me to glare at her for trying to talk us out of getting married to each other.
  • “Look at me, Amber,” I said, standing in front of Amber so that she could gaze into my eyes. “This may not be the wedding I wanted for us but you are the woman I want to be married to,” I said gently, taking her hands in mine.
  • “I love you very much and I know you love me too. I am making this promise to you here in front of this church and in the presence of Maven and Susan. I will do anything and everything possible to give you a good life, you will never have to worry about anything and I am going to love you, even in death.” I told her, meaning every word I say to her.
  • I slowly lifted her veil and kissed the tears that were now falling from her eyes, I guess she could no longer hold them back.
  • “I love you very much too, Roy, I cannot imagine a world without you, and I can’t stop loving you even in death,” Amber told me in a teary tone, tears still falling from her beautiful eyes.
  • “The marriage vows have already been said,” someone said, causing us to turn our gaze to the direction of the voice to see that it was the priest.
  • “Sorry I am late,” the priest said, walking closer to stand in front of us. “I heard your vows to each other,” the priest added, smiling at us.
  • “It was not a vow priest, they were just fooling around,” Susan told the priest, sounding a little strange.
  • “No young lady, that is a promise, they have made promises to each other in the sight of God of which we are all witnesses so I consider it their marriage vows.” the priest replied Susan, glancing briefly at her before turning his gaze back on me and Amber.
  • “So I will have to ask you, Roy Holden, will you take Amber Chaim as your lawfully wedded wife, to love and to hold, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do you part?” the priest asked, peering at me.
  • “Yes, I do,” I replied almost immediately, taking Amber’s hands.
  • “And you, Amber Chaim, will you take Roy Holden as your lawfully wedded husband, to love and to hold, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do you part?” the priest asked again, turning his gaze at Amber.
  • “Yes I do,” Amber replied after gazing briefly into my eyes.
  • “With the power vested in me, I now pronounce you, husband and wife,” the priest said and asked that I kiss my bride.
  • Smiling, I leaned forward and kissed Amber’s gorgeous lips which still tasted sweetly as it had been the first day I kissed her.
  • “We have something to share with the both of you,” I said to Maven and Susan, holding Amber’s hand after we finished with some paperwork to register our marriage.
  • “What is it this time?” Susan asked almost immediately, peering from Amber to me.
  • “I am pregnant,” Amber said, smiling and lowering her gaze coyly to her tummy.
  • “Pregnant?” Maven and Susan echoed at the same time, I guess they are surprised to hear that we are already expecting.
