Chapter 3

  • Roy Holden’s POV
  • “I am sorry Mike, but I will have to leave everything behind just to be with Amber.” I told MIke, forcing myself not to get swayed by his facial expression as I believed he would get over it. Besides, he is no longer a kid.
  • I walked into my room, feeling very furious at my Mum and Dad. I do not understand how they could care so much about money and class and care less about every other thing. I was already feeling very suffocated by this sort of life and the high society thing when luckily Amber Chaim transferred to our school. I can still recall her first day in school and how I was so fascinated by her simplicity. She was nothing like the so-called high society and I wanted nothing more but to spend my life with her.
  • I picked up the things I would need from my room and left the room without giving a second thought about what I am giving up for Amber’s love. I can start all over and feel even happier knowing I am going to be with Amber.
  • “You are very serious,” Mike said as I walked out of my room, his tone so deep and I know that he is hurting and hoping that I can change my mind.
  • “I am sorry, Mike.” I said, walking past him and heading to my car.
  • “You no longer have a brother,” Mike yelled from behind me, causing me to pause and turn my gaze on him. I know he is hurting as we only had each other in this huge house. Now that I am leaving it will have to be him alone.
  • “I am sorry, Mike,” I told him again as those were the only words I could find at the moment. He would get over it and we would reconcile in time, I thought as I drove out of our mansion.
  • While driving, I dialed Maven Brooks' number on my phone and put the earpiece to my ear waiting for him to answer. Maven Brooks is the only male friend I had since high school. We came from the same social class and he had always got my back.
  • “Hello Roy, how did it go with your parents?” Maven asked immediately he answered the phone. I had told him I was going to speak to my parents about marrying Amber.
  • “Negative,” I replied, tightening my jaw muscles wishing it was positive as I had dreamed of giving Amber a very luxurious wedding.
  • “I am almost at your place, Maven,” I told him before he could speak and then dropped the call, wondering what I am going to say to Amber’s parents now that I had no support from my family.
  • “What are you going to do now?” Maven asked after I arrived at his place.
  • “I do not know Maven, I need to speak to Amber first,” I told him, not sure of what to do at the moment. I decided to call Amber to hear how it went with her parents only to see her call coming in.
  • “Amber,” I said, a little excited to see her call but my heart sank into my belly when I heard Amber crying. “What is it, Amber?” I asked, feeling very agitated to know why she was crying, but could not make sense of what she was saying over the phone.
  • “Slow down, Amber, tell me where you are,” I told her and waited for her to say where she was. I quickly ended the call.
  • “I need to go fetch Amber,” I told Maven, rushing off to my car again.
  • “I am coming with you,” Maven said, rushing into my car too.
  • ***
  • Amber ran into my arms as soon as we saw each other. She was crying uncontrollably that I had to try and calm her down to know what the problem was.
  • “Look at me, Amber, I am here for you, tell me, what is it?” I tilted her head backwards so that she could look into my eyes as I am a few inches taller than her.
  • “I no longer have a family, Roy,” Amber said, tears still falling from her eyes.
  • “What?” I muttered, a little confused by what she just said.
  • “My parents would not let me marry you, Roy, they made me choose you over them,” Amber told me, still crying. I unconsciously glanced at Maven who was with me before throwing my arms around her, taking her into my arms again.
  • Her family must have rejected our marriage and had disowned her just like mine did, I said inwardly, feeling her pain and knowing that her pain would be more compared to mine.
  • I was never very close with my family except for my younger brother Mike, but Amber’s family was different, she always talks about them and I have seen it the few times I went to her house. She must be very heartbroken.
  • “I am sorry Amber,” I said, not knowing what to say to her. We love each other very much, why can’t our parents just let us be happy. We may be young but we sure are in love.
  • “Dry your tears Amber, we are going to start a family of our own,” I said, tilting her head backwards again so that she could look into my eyes. I gently placed my hand on her tummy, peering into her eyes so that she could understand what I mean.
  • Amber slowly stopped crying and placed her hand too against my hand that was still on her tummy, understanding that I was referring to our baby in her womb. “We are going to make a happy family of our own,” I told her again, causing her to nod in agreement and wiping her eyes with the back of her free arm.
  • “We are going to get married tomorrow,” I said, gazing from Amber to Maven, whose brows rose immediately in surprise. “I cannot wait any longer, Amber, we are going to get married tomorrow regardless of our parents decision,” I said, gazing into Amber's eyes again and I can see she is with me even though she said nothing.
