• “Avalynn's not here” Jace said to himself, his pulse rising. “She's gone. Avalynn's gone.” He turned towards the kitchen. “Alice! Alice!”
• His voice, which had started off as a whisper, grew louder and more panicked with each syllable, the desperation creeping into his tone like a dark shadow.
• “Alice!” Jace called out again, his footsteps growing heavier as he rushed into the kitchen. “Have you seen Avalynn? She’s not in her room. She’s not anywhere.”
