Chapter 6 Evidence

  • KIMBERLY'S POV
  • I waited for a while for the person to reply. I didn't know if I was doing the right thing or not. But I had to try, right?
  • As I waited, I looked at the plate of food in front of me. I was starving. Who cared if it belonged to the Lycan Prince?
  • I began eating it as I waited for the text. And hell, it was yummy. Maybe because it was my first proper meal after a long time of running.
  • My phone beeped, and I quickly put away the food to look at it. “I'm someone who holds the key to your freedom.”
  • I furrowed my brows. What was he even talking about? The key to my freedom?
  • Did he mean that he could help me get out of the pack house? But who was he? How did he know everything that was going on?
  • “How do you know my name?” I asked. He had called me by my full name in the first text. This time, he texted back immediately.
  • “I know everything about you and your dad.” I froze for a second. My dad?
  • I quickly began typing. “My dad? How do you know him? Do you know where he is? Is he okay?” I asked, feeling emotional. Tears welled in my eyes, too.
  • But at the same time, just before I sent the text, someone knocked on my door.
  • I hurriedly put away the phone, afraid that someone would find out what I was doing.
  • But seeing that it was Marina, I felt a little relaxed. “The queen mother wants to see you,” she said.
  • I furrowed my brows. “The queen mother?” I asked in confusion.
  • “Yeah,” Marina nodded. “She came by earlier. She's in the Black house. I'll take you.”
  • I didn't think I had a choice, so I let Marina take me. I had so many questions. Was the Queen Mother the Lycan's Prince's mom?
  • The Black house, just like they called it, was painted black. It didn't look as bad and scary as I had imagined. It was at the other end of the compound.
  • When I got in, the middle-aged woman dismissed Marina. She was elegant, and anyone would know that she was from the royal family.
  • “Kimberly Stone,” She said with a smile when I bowed to her. I didn't even know if that was what I was supposed to do.
  • I nodded quietly. I was a bit on alert. I didn't even know why I was meeting her.
  • “You are beautiful. I finally understand why the king wants you so bad in the family,” she said. I furrowed my brows a little. The king wanted me in the family? I didn't know anything about it.
  • She sighed and looked at me. “I won't beat around the bush, Kimberly. This is a dangerous place for a human. I want to help you,” she said.
  • I looked at her and sighed. “How?” I asked. It didn't make any sense that she just wanted to help me.
  • “Have you thought about the text messages? You need allies,” she said.
  • And my head went blank for a second. Was it her? Was she the unknown person I was texting with?
  • I felt a little mad. “What are you playing at?" I asked. She was a member of the pack. Was she trying to trick me into my death? Was she testing my loyalty?
  • But she sighed. “Hey, calm down. I'm not your enemy.”
  • “What do you want?” I asked, feeling a little infuriated.
  • “I can help you get away from the Lycan Prince. He is as dangerous as everyone says. If you stay, you will be dead within weeks, if not days,” she said.
  • I was a bit confused. No mother would say such things about her son. So I began having questions in my head.
  • “And what do you get in return?” I asked. I wasn't so stupid. I knew she was up to something.
  • “You help me get rid of him,” she said. “A person like him can't be the king. It will only mean more death for the humans, and that is dangerous for everyone.”
  • What she said made sense, but I just couldn't trust her. Still, I decided to play along to see what she was up to.
  • “What do you know about my dad?” I asked. That was what I cared about the most at that time.
  • She took a deep breath and looked at me. “I want you to meet someone, Kimberly. He is going to help us with this,” she said.
  • I was still confused when she made a call and handed me her phone. “Be good. He is our only way out.”
  • When the call on the other end was picked up, I saw a man. It was a video call. “Hi, Kimberly? My name is Agent Kane,” he said. “I work for the Agency.” Agency?
  • I opened my eyes wide. Those were the people who took my dad.
  • “I'm sorry about your mom. I should tell you that she was buried earlier today,” he continued speaking.
  • Tears welled in my eyes, but I tried to remain so calm. My mom was already buried. I didn't even attend her burial.
  • “What about my dad? Do you know where he is?” I asked.
  • “Kimberly, your dad is here. He is being charged with multiple murders,” he said, and my eyes opened wide in shock.
  • “No!" I said. “It wasn't his fault. He was defending himself. I was there.”
  • The agent looked at me quietly for a while. “I want to believe you, Kimberly. But do you have any evidence?”
  • I fell at a loss. “I don't… but he. It was those… the animals, the night creatures…”
  • “If anyone heard you speak, they would think you had gone crazy, Kimberly,” the agent said. “But I want to believe you. Let me help you. We don't want your dad to lose his job or go to prison. Do we?"
  • I took a deep breath to calm myself down. “What do you want?”
  • “Evidence,” Agent Kane said. “I want you to gather as much evidence as you can. We both know what Mr. Devon and his friends are capable of…”
  • “Mr. Devon?” I asked in confusion. Why was he talking about Myles?
  • “Your soon-to-be husband,” Agent Kane replied. And I shook my head at him. “No, it wasn't him. It was the other group, the vampires…”
  • “We don't know that, Kimberly,” the agent said. “But we can find out, can't we?”
  • I was silent for a while before shaking my head. “I won't do it. It's dangerous,” I said. He wanted me to spy on that crazy man? I would be dead if he found out.
  • “Then I guess we have to lock your dad up for good. Or worse, he could be given a death sentence. The agency isn't that shitty government you are used to, Kimberly. They don't give a shit about your dad,” he said.
  • And I sighed deeply. I didn't want my dad to be locked up. I didn't want him dead either.
  • “I know it's hard, Kimberly. But you have to choose between that animal that gives no shit about you, or your dad. It's up to you,” he said.
  • I fell silent again. What was I supposed to do?
  • “All you have to do is gather a little evidence that will prove that your dad is innocent. If things go out of hand, you can call me. I'll get you out immediately,” he said.
  • “But…”
  • The Agent sighed. “You have twenty-four hours to decide, Kimberly. Your dad's freedom is on the line.”
