Chapter 4 Why He Hates You

  • KIMBERLY'S POV
  • When I looked up at him again, I trembled. He looked like he wanted to swallow me alive.
  • I quickly took steps back, my lips pursed. I wanted to tell him that it was just an accident, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.
  • “Make use of those eyes or we will get rid of them,” he said.
  • I could see fear in the other nanny's faces. It meant that he was serious about everything he said.
  • Luckily, he didn't concentrate too much on me. He looked at Marina. “Report to me everything she does,” he said.
  • Marina immediately nodded her head. “Yes, sir,” she said, and bowed.
  • She remained in that position until the Lycan Prince had left. Then she held my hand and gently led me upstairs.
  • My room was the first one just after the stairs. It was huge and well furnished. But I still preferred my room back home. I wasn't here voluntarily.
  • I first took a bath, and when I came out of the bathroom, Marina had brought me some clothes. “Change into these, ma'am,” she said. “They may not be very good, but…”
  • “They are okay,” I said. It was a pair of blue jeans and a black hoodie.
  • I was glad that she hadn't brought me one of those heavy and bright-colored dresses that the girls in the palace always wore.
  • Marina seemed shocked, but she smiled it off. I smiled back and went back to the bathroom to change.
  • When I came back, she had already changed the sheets. “They look good on you, ma'am,” she said.
  • I sighed deeply. “Marina, right?” I asked. And she immediately nodded her head.
  • “Um, just call me Kim,” I said. She was my agemate, so it felt awkward when she called me ma'am.
  • “Um… that's not appropriate… I …”
  • “That's what I want you to call me,” I said, cutting her short.
  • She hesitated for a second before nodding her head. “Okay,” she said.
  • I felt a little relieved that she had agreed. I looked at myself in the mirror and smiled. “Are these yours?” I asked, referring to the clothes.
  • She seemed a little embarrassed, but she nodded her head. “Yeah… I didn't know where to get other clothes for you. So I thought I could give you these because we are almost the same age…”
  • I nodded. “Thanks,” I said.
  • But she seemed a bit surprised. “Do you like them?” She asked.
  • I nodded back. “Yeah, why?” I asked.
  • She sighed. “You are so nice, Ma'am… I mean, Kim. You are going to be the Lycan's wife, yet you don't look down on us.”
  • Her words surprised me. I was about to tell her that I wasn't going to be his wife, but I changed my mind.
  • “You know, he is not as bad as everyone says,” she said with a sigh.
  • I furrowed my brows and sat on the bed beside her. She seemed a little tense, but I told her to relax.
  • “So, have you been here for long?” I asked.
  • She nodded her head. “Yeah, since I was ten. My sister brought me over when she came to work here. I started serving when I turned eighteen.”
  • I nodded in understanding. “So, the Lycan, what kind of man is he?” I asked.
  • “He's tough. He doesn't like to be disobeyed. But if you listen to him and do as he says, he treats you very well,” she explained.
  • I felt a little lucky that I had Marina. Even though I didn't trust her yet, she looked like an honest girl.
  • I wanted to ask her more about the Lycan Prince, but Gillian walked into the room.
  • When Marina saw her, she hurriedly stood up. But Gillian only looked at her briefly. “Scram!” She said.
  • Marina didn't wait to be told twice. She walked out and closed the door.
  • I lay back on the bed and looked at the girl. I tried to be calm, but I was a bit scared. What if she did something to me when we were alone?
  • “Do you know why he hates you?” She asked, looking around the room.
  • I was a bit stunned by the question. But I sighed. “Because I'm human,” I said.
  • But Gillian burst out laughing. “You are crazy to think that,” she said. “He wouldn't waste his hatred on you just because you are human…”
  • I looked at her in confusion. Was there another reason why he would hate me?
  • “Three years ago, when you turned eighteen, he sent his cousin, Tommy, to bring you to the castle,” she said, and I looked at her in confusion.
  • “He did?” I asked. So it wasn't the first time they wanted me here?
  • “Tommy was his best friend. He was more like his brother. He took care of him, you know, when he was young. But when Tommy came to get you, he never came back. He was killed,” Gillian explained.
  • I opened my eyes wide in shock. “What? I didn't know anything about it,” I said.
  • She nodded. “I figured as much,” Gillian said. “You are so weak, I don't want to make you my enemy. All I want is for you to stay here your time and leave when it is done. Don't cross paths with me…”
  • I hesitated before nodding. “Okay,” I said. I didn't want clashing paths with her.
  • “So, go up there and tell him you didn't know anything about Tommy. Your life will be a bit simpler here if he knows that,” she said.
  • I shivered a little when I thought of being with the man in the room.
  • “He likes pork. There is some in the kitchen. He hasn't eaten anything the whole day. Bring it up when you go,” she said.
  • It felt like a trap, but I wasn't sure. Maybe the girl had just realized that I meant no harm and decided to help me a bit.
  • “Don't look him in the eyes. He hates it,” Gillian said and walked out.
  • I sat still for a while before getting up. So what if it was a trick? I wanted my life to be easy, okay?
