• Jasper got back home late at night, he opened the door and looked around the whole apartment, it was just as he left it in the morning.
• His mind slipped back, unbidden, to those few chaotic days when Annie had planted herself in his apartment as if she owned the place. He could almost hear her clatter of misplaced items.
• In his memory, the living-room was a mess, pillows on the floor, papers scattered, the air holding that strange warmth of her presence.
