  • They’d been on the island three days — maybe four. Long enough that the sun had branded their skin in shades of pink and gold, long enough for the salt to crust their hair into tangled knots. Long enough that the only thing they could find to hate more than each other was the hunger that gnawed at their guts.
  • She found him by the rock pool — shirtless, skin slick with sweat, veins bulging in his forearms as he hacked at a coconut with a piece of wrecked metal. He didn’t look up when she stormed over barefoot, skirt tied up around her thighs, hair wild from wind and salt.
  • “That’s mine,” she snapped, pointing at the half-open coconut dripping sweet water into the sand.
