Chapter 23

• I woke up to the sound of men's voices in total darkness. I didn't immediately realize where I was or what was going on, but my instinct for self-preservation told me it was best to lie still and keep quiet. Slowly I came to, I was still under a light blanket in the same position in the same motel where the three of us arrived yesterday. How much time had passed, and what had changed in these hours? Had something terrible happened? Gregory.
• I stayed still and listened to what the men were saying. Two of the voices were familiar, but the third... I thought I'd heard it before, but maybe I wasn't awake yet.
• "You are being guarded by four policemen - two outside and two inside in the next room. I am personally in charge of this operation, and I will not let anyone else get hurt."
