Chapter 11 Dubious Identity

  • Since Xia Yu wasn’t familiar with the roads in C City, it was already a little over five in the afternoon when they arrived at the Ning Residence.
  • “What… are you doing here?” Xia Yu couldn’t resist asking upon seeing the two huge words, ‘Ning Residence’.
  • Shen Beiyi gazed out the window and contemplated how she should explain this to him. “I’m taking care of a child for someone else.” Originally, she didn’t want to tell him this, but her presence in the Ning Residence seemed rather difficult to explain.
  • “Taking care of a child?” Xia Yu frowned and thought for a long while before he responded. “Are you saying that you’re working as a nanny at Ning Shaochen’s house?”
  • “Yes.”
  • After gaining her affirmation, Xia Yu turned sideways and said, “Beiyi, I can help you find a suitable job. You’re very smart, so you don’t need to be a nanny—” He’d seen how smart she was when her mother was hospitalized.
  • “It’s okay.” Shen Beiyi declined at once before he’d finished speaking. She kept her head lowered, not daring to look at him.
  • Sitting in the driver’s seat, Xia Yu remained silent for some time, seemingly digesting this sudden information. After a while, he unfastened his seatbelt and turned his entire body around before gripping her shoulders with both hands. Looking at her, he asked, “Are you in some sort of trouble? Tell me how much money you need, and I’ll give it to you. Don’t continue this job anymore.”
  • “Xia Yu, please restrain yourself.” His emotional reaction had Shen Beiyi slightly at a loss and she struggled to break free from his grip. They were only ordinary friends, so he didn’t have any right to interfere in her life. “Er… Be careful on your way back,” she said, gripping the car’s door handle. She was just about to open the car door, but Xia Yu stopped her from doing so.
  • He then got out of the car before quickly walking over to the passenger seat and opening the car door for her. Then, he propped a hand on the roof of the car and carefully helped her out. “Minimize your contact with cold water these few days. Also, wear a few more layers so that you don’t catch a cold.” He gazed at her tenderly. After that, he leaned down and tucked a few stray strands of hair behind her ear. “I have to go back to W City temporarily these few days, but after I’ve settled everything over there, I’ll come back and look for you. Wait for me.” After saying that, he flashed her a faint smile before turning and climbing into the car.
  • Even after the car had driven far into the distance, Shen Beiyi was still standing frozen to the spot, her mind far away. Everything that had happened this afternoon had her feeling a tad bewildered.
  • Actually, Xia Yu was pretty nice to her at the hospital back then, but her mother seemed to have something against him. Every time she saw him approaching her, she always made up an excuse to send him away.
  • Hence, this was the first time he’d ever openly displayed such care for her.
  • Ning Shaochen, who’d long since came home, stood before the window in his room. When he saw the intimacy they exhibited outside his gate, his eyes darkened a smidge.
  • When Shen Beiyi went into the house, a servant came over to her. “Beiyi, Young Master Shaochen asked you to go to his study.”
  • As the autumn breeze blew past her, Shen Beiyi shivered afore nodding. A wave of panic welled within her because she knew that the man would never let her off easily.
  • In the study, the man was leaning against the mahogany desk, flipping through a stack of documents in his hands.
  • Upon hearing the door, he raised his head and threw the folder in his hands aside before folding his arms and staring at Shen Beiyi. “What’s your relationship with that man?” The man's gruff voice floated out, deep and profound.
  • Liu Xu had sent Xia Yu’s information to him earlier. To his surprise, Xia Yu was the third son of the Xia Family.
  • The Xia Family ran a chain of aristocratic hospitals and had more than 1,000 aristocratic hospitals globally. All their doctors were internationally-renowned medical experts. No matter if one was wealthy, it didn’t necessarily mean that one would be able to secure their services. Even his medicine was prescribed by the Xia Family. Considering the uniqueness of the industry the Xia Family was involved in, basically everyone in the business world would give the Xia Family some leeway when anything happened.
  • However, he was surprised that the youngest son of the influential Xia Family would fall for his son’s nanny.
  • Her heart skipping a beat, Shen Beiyi inhaled deeply. “This is a private matter.”
  • “Do you think I’d allow someone of dubious identity to take care of Xiaoxi?”
  • Dubious identity? Didn’t he already approve of her previously? And now he was saying that she was of dubious identity just because she was acquainted with an affluent man?
  • “In your world, Young Master Ning, what kind of person has a transparent identity? Do you judge according to what you see? Or is it according to what you hear? In interpersonal relationships, you can’t just say someone has a dubious identity and that makes it so. Instead, you have to sense it with your heart. I’ve been here for quite a long time, and I’ve been treating Xiaoxi whole-heartedly. Young Master Ning, I think you did see all that, so if you think I’m not suitable and wish to dismiss me, then please give me a reason to leave.” Shen Beiyi seemed to have uttered all that in a single breath. She turned her head away, her eyes welling with tears.
  • Ning Shaochen looked at the woman before him calmly, not saying a single word nor making a single movement; he merely stared at her with a half-smile on his face.
  • Shen Beiyi turned a tad uncomfortable at his stare. Reflecting on her words earlier, a tinge of regret surged within her all of a sudden. How could she have forgotten that this man wasn’t a kind person?
  • “Young Master Ning, if there’s nothing else, please excuse me.” She turned to make her escape after saying that.
  • “Just go. The Ning Family will never harbor a person of dubious identity.” Ning Shaochen’s face was devoid of emotion as he gazed at the sharp-tongued woman before him, his eyes cold. Until this very day, there hadn’t been any woman who was brave enough to gainsay him, but this woman had again set a record.
  • “What?”
