Chapter 6

  • “Are you sure this looks fine?” I asked the girls over the phone, we were having a group Facetime.
  • “Sure, you look spectacular.” Michelle replied.
  • I was wearing high-waisted, curve-hugging dark denim jeans, and on top, a satin champagne-colored corset top — strapless, with a subtle sweetheart neckline that accentuated my collarbones, exposing a little cleavage.
  • Leaving my curls loose, tumbling down my back, I wore a delicate gold chain around my neck, complimenting it with a slick of nude gloss on my lips, smoky eyes, and heels just high enough to boost my confidence.
  • “I still can’t believe you got invited to the Party, I have tried to get those mean girls to notice me the whole semester, if only I knew publicly embarrassing one of them could have earned me an invite.” Evelyn groaned and we laughed.
  • “Gina, I am still not comfortable with this idea. I don’t trust those girls mean well.” Tessa chirped in, her large glasses covering her side of the screen.
  • “It is worth the risk, if you ask me. You might never get another opportunity to join their clique if you miss this one.” Evelyn argued.
  • “Girls, don’t worry about me. I am sure they figured out they would rather have me with them than against them, but even if not, I can take care of myself.” I assured them.
  • Tessa sighed, clearly not convinced. “Fine, I have to go off now, I need to complete my Harry Potter book series tonight.”
  • “Oh my God, you are such a nerd,” Michelle taunted and Evelyn laughed.
  • “Yeah whatever, bye girl!” She said before leaving the call, I couldn’t help but smile.
  • “Ladies, you don’t have to be mean to her.”
  • “It was just a joke!” Michelle laughed.

  • The cab dropped me off at the location, it was a bit far away from home but the environment was generally safe and lively.
  • I found the club without any difficulty and at the entrance, I was asked for identification because my name wasn’t on the list, I pulled out the card that Mandy had given me and was immediately granted entrance.
  • Okay, so it wasn’t a prank after all!
  • The party was lit, there were a lot of students present, dancing and vibing. I didn’t know the school had this many hot kids; yeah, this was clearly not the place for a nerd or dork, it was the rich fancy kids party.
  • I was wandering around the club, looking for a familiar face when suddenly an arm pulled me to the side; I turned around and was shocked to see Adonis.
  • He wore a black button-down shirt; the top three buttons undone, revealing a glimpse of his toned chest and that eagle tattoo on the side of his neck. The sleeves were rolled just enough to reveal the muscle in his forearms.
  • His pants were tailored black slacks, low on his hips, paired with combat-style black boots. His messy blonde curls looked like he had barely run his hands through them before showing up, but on him, that disheveled look made him hotter.
  • “What are you doing here?” his low deep voice growled at me, a pint of anger in his eyes.
  • “I should ask you the same!” I retorted.
  • “I am a member of the Crimson Society…”
  • “What is that?” I immediately cut him short.
  • He groaned. “You see, the fact that you don’t even know what that is, it is enough reason for you not to be here. The Crimson Society is a major club for the elite students only, so who let you in?”
  • I scoffed and folded my arms. “I got an invite,” I said, flashing the card at him.
  • His eyes widened in disbelief. “You have only been here for two days, there is no way you got invited. Who gave you this?” he queried.
  • I laughed in sarcasm. “Mandy Davenport gave it to me. What? You didn’t see that one coming?”
  • His expression changed immediately when I mentioned that name. It was a mixture of surprise and disbelief.
  • “The Queen of the Hive invited you to this party?” he asked, and without letting me answer, he continued. “I actually thought you were smarter than this, you embarrassed one of her own and yet you think she means well for you?”
  • “Well I am being optimistic, now what do you care?” I rolled my eyes at him.
  • “Listen to me, Gina. You need to leave right now, turn around and go back home!” he ordered.
  • “What? Are you kidding?” I asked in surprise.
  • He grabbed my arm immediately. “No, I am not! Now you do as I say!”
  • I immediately dragged my arm away from him. “Excuse me? Stop acting like you are my father or something, now you better leave me alone and take your big brother bullshit elsewhere.” I fired at him, and then walked away.
  • I took a deep breath to calm myself the moment I stepped away from him, I wasn’t sure why I got so mad. I know he was just trying to look out for me; I just don’t like it when people try to act like they own me.
  • Just then I heard a feminine voice call out to me. “Hey Gina! Over here!”
  • I turned to my right and there was The Hive, at least five of them ladies. Now I wasn’t so sure of my decision anymore, but I approached them nevertheless.
  • “Gina, welcome to the party!” Mandy said with a smile.
  • “Thank you.” I replied.
  • “Also, I apologize on behalf of Jenna, while we value ourselves over nonmembers, we are not generally bullies.” She laughed.
  • I smiled. “I am glad to hear that, and I am also sorry for my words yesterday.” I said to Jenna.
  • “Oh, it is all good, girl. We hope maybe someday you can decide to join The Hive, we are the best girl group on this campus and there are so many benefits to joining us…”
  • “Oh Jenna, don’t bore her with that right now, we can always discuss it after the party, for now let us have fun.” Mandy cut her short, right before handing me a drink.
  • “Of course, to new friendships!” Jenna toasted and we replied, gently clicking our glasses before drinking.
  • Maybe they are not so bad after all, Tessa was worried for nothing, I always believed it was best to know people for yourself before making an enemy of them based on other people’s opinion.
