• "Good, good," I said to Vanessa, who only narrowed her eyes at my probably amused smile, since I couldn't help myself.
• As I watched Vanessa step into my office, her comment about its impressiveness hung in the air, a stark contrast to the chaos I had intentionally caused in her morning routine. She was ten minutes early, a detail that irked me more than I cared to admit. I had been looking forward to punishing her for disrupting my plans, although I hadn't quite decided what form that punishment would take.
