Chapter 45

  • The room felt warmer than usual, maybe because of the laughter coming from the bed, maybe because, for a moment, everything was okay again. Mia sat upright now, her head gently wrapped in a fresh white bandage, the pink tint back in her cheeks as she told Sophie all about the ice cream chase earlier that day, her tiny hands flailing in the air with excitement. Mike stood by the window, arms crossed but a faint smile tugged at his lips as he watched her. Margaret sat close, keeping a hand gently on Mia’s back while Melanie hovered just a step behind, her arms folded but her eyes locked on her daughter’s face, soaking in every breath she took, as if she was afraid it might be the last time she'd get to.
  • The doctor stepped in, clipboard in hand, a professional calm in his voice as he spoke. “She’s doing remarkably well,” he said, then looked toward Melanie. “Still, I’d strongly advise you keep her here for observation till tomorrow. It’s a head injury, after all.”
  • Melanie, though grateful for his concern, shook her head with polite firmness. “I appreciate the care, doctor, but I’d like her discharged today. I’ll sign whatever paperwork is necessary.”
