Chapter 8 No One Would Testify For You

  • "How did this happen? How did this happen? I clearly didn't do it! Why would the security footage show that?"
  • Su Yao lost control and shrieked. The cries of despair echoed in the empty room.
  • Tears fell uncontrollably, as Su Yao looked at Abby in desperation. "Believe me. I really didn't do it. I really wasn't behind this!"
  • Abby sighed. "I don't want to believe you did either, but the security footage recorded it clearly. At Half past eleven, you suddenly walked over to Mr. Lu. You said something, then handed Mr. Lu wine. Afterwards, he became dizzy..."
  • "Wait!" Su Yao's eyes suddenly widened. "Did you say that it happened at half past eleven?"
  • Abby nodded. "Yes. Half past eleven."
  • Su Yao revealed a hint of immense joy. "Abby, it wasn't me! The person who gave Lu Licheng the wine glass wasn't me. I clearly remember that I called my dad at half past eleven. Ask me when I came back. I complained that it was too loud outside, so I went downstairs to the toilet to take the call. I was on the phone at half past eleven! That's right! I even bumped into Zhou Tong in the toilet. She can testify for me!"
  • "Su Yao," Abby looked at her with pitiful eyes and reminded her, "Zhou Tong died."
  • It felt like someone had suddenly hit her around the head. Su Yao looked at Abby blankly and didn't return to her senses for a long time.
  • Yes, Zhou Tong's dead, and that's why she suffered like this. She was atoning for Zhou Tong's death every day.
  • How can a dead person testify?
  • Su Yao fell limp onto the chair and started muttering to herself. She didn't know if she was mumbling for herself or for Abby to hear. "I didn't kill Zhou Tong. How could I cause my best girl friend to die? That night, Zhou Tong and I went to the toilet and drank a whole bottle of red wine. We chatted for a long time and we said that when we're old, we were going to good sisters with white hair. We said that we would be our only bridesmaids and that we would betroth our children to be sisters forever..."
  • She covered her face with both hands as the tears spilled from the cracks between her fingers. The quiet room was filled with the sound of her anguished cries.
  • The clearer those memories were, the more her heart ached.
  • After she was put in prison, she thought about a lot of people, but she didn't dare think about Zhou Tong.
  • She was afraid of thinking about Zhou Tong. She was afraid to see her stare at her with blood all over the hate-filled look on her face.
  • How was she going to explain herself to a dead person?
  • Abby hesitated for a moment as if she wanted to say something, but couldn't hold back in the end. "Besides yourself, no one else can help you."
  • Su Yao's head shot up. "My dad can testify that I was in a call with him at half past eleven. Abby, won't you please go ask him to help me?"
  • Although people from the Su family no longer acknowledged her, their family's blood ran in her body. She was the daughter who they raised from birth. They wouldn't just watch her suffer and not help."
  • What's more, this involved proving her innocence.
  • Su Yao held onto Abby's hand as if she saw a trace of hope. "Help me find my dad. If you really can't, then find my mum. They'll definitely help me," she said hurriedly.
  • Abby looked at her pitifully.
  • In the past, Su Yao was a confident and cheerful person who had many sons of famous families from Linyi.
  • But she completely gave her heart to Lu Licheng and there was no way of getting it back.
  • Abby still remembered the first time that she saw Su Yao. She stood under the sunlight and smiled brighter than the sun.
  • Who would have thought that she'd end up like this today?
  • Abby didn't have the heart to tell her that Su Zhangzhong publically announced their severance with her, and he would immediately shun whoever mentioned the two words 'Su Yao' in front of him.
  • Abby sighed, then got to her feet. "I'll do my best," she said.
  • "Thank you Abby. You have to help me ask. I'll wait for your news."
  • Su Yao looked at Abby with hope written all over her face as if she had put all her hope onto her. Abby couldn't refuse. "I'll go," she said with a nod.
  • ............
  • Four years later.
  • The sunlight burned the ground. Waves of heat started to rise from the ground.
  • *Click* The female guard slowly pulled back the heavy prison door to reveal a crack. A woman slowly walked out from inside.
  • She was very skinny. In fact, she was as skinny as a bamboo and she looked like the wind could topple her over.
  • Her face was very pale, but pretty. It wasn't difficult to tell that she was a natural beauty, but she had long scars on her neck which ruined her image. She wore a light grey top, blue jeans, and canvas shoes with an unknown colour. She looked like a middle-aged, married woman of over thirty years old.
  • She tightly held onto a small metal box in her arms, and looked at the passing cars in bewilderment. She would always think about being outside whilst she was in prison, but now that she really was out, she didn't know where she should go.
  • She didn't have any relatives; no family, and she caused her best friend's death.
  • She had no where to go.
  • If she couldn't find a place to stay as soon as possible, then she would have to spend the night on the streets.
  • She pulled out a piece of paper from her pocket like it was precious. On the note, there was a phone number written down.
  • Su Yao sighed in relief when she saw that no harm came to the note paper. She begged the chief of the guards for a long time for this number.
  • She looked up at the telephone box across the road.
  • She clumsily picked up the phone and dialled the number on the paper.
  • The call was picked up after a long time. A man with an impatient voice spoke up.
  • "Who are you looking for?"
  • "Hello, I'm Su Yao. Do you still remember?"
  • The person on the phone couldn't remember. "Which Su Yao?" They asked.
  • "Four years ago, did you carry the body of a small child from Southwest prison?"
  • The man carefully thought back and seemed to recollect the incident.
  • "What do you want?"
  • "Where did you bury the child? I want to go see him."
  • "Who are you to him?"
  • Su Yao's throat couldn't help but choke up. "I'm his... mother," she said with a hoarse voice.
  • The person on the other line made an 'Oh' sound like he wasn't surprised. Then said, "I don't remember."
  • "How could you not remember? Please think carefully," said Su Yao impatiently, as tears rolled down her dry face. "I beg you. Please tell me? I really want to go see him..."
  • "How about this? You prepare three million and then call me. I'll tell you where he's buried."
  • *Slam!* The call was cut off.
  • Su Yao called a few times but they didn't pick up.
  • She stood under the burning sun, and yet she felt weighed down like an igloo!
  • She didn't a cent to her name, so how was she going to get three million?
