  • The house was quiet, save for the soft ticking of the wall clock and the hum of the ceiling fan above. I sat curled on the couch, my legs tucked beneath me, with Sophie leaning against my side and Cal Junior sitting cross-legged on the floor, fiddling with the remote. Dinner had gone smoothly—spaghetti and meatballs, their favorite—but now, with the plates washed and the night creeping in, my nerves began to tighten again.
