- The scent of fresh paint and new wood filled the living room as I stepped inside, the air still carrying that crisp new-house feeling. Cal was standing near the fireplace, arranging small figurines along the mantle. His expression was one of deep concentration, his fingers adjusting each piece with meticulous precision.
