Chapter 8 Squandered Five Hundred Thousand

  • “What an utter waste!”
  • Emotional, the elderly man carefully reached out and picked up the crushed pill bit by bit.
  • At that sight, everyone present was stunned to the core.
  • What's happening here? Why is he acting as though he has lost his mind?
  • “What's the meaning of this, Mr. Linnell?” Xavier asked with a slight frown, his eyes pinned on Dorian.
  • Regretfully, Dorian hadn't the time to bother about the man. He likewise gaped at the elderly man.
  • “W-Where did you get this?” the elderly man demanded, slowly lifting his head and casting his gaze at everyone there.
  • “Well, sir, that is a piece of trash from a dimwit,” Xavier replied with a curl of his lips, shaking his head disdainfully.
  • All the members of the Quantrill family nodded in agreement.
  • “Hah! Haha... If this is a piece of trash, what isn't trash? Then the Rejuvenating and Revitalizing Pill is even more so, isn't it?”
  • The elderly man shook his head slightly with a sneer on his face.
  • “What?”
  • Once again, the crowd was startled.
  • After all, the Rejuvenating and Revitalizing Pill brought by Dorian was definitely a priceless treasure.
  • Linnell Pharmaceuticals once auctioned such a pill, and the bidding price went as high as two hundred thousand.
  • Yet, the elderly man claimed that the Rejuvenating and Revitalizing Pill was even lowlier than trash compared to the pill given by Osmond.
  • Doesn't that mean that the value of that pill far exceeds two hundred thousand and might even be worth five hundred thousand? So, Kieran squandered five hundred thousand with a single trample?
  • At that thought, the entire Quantrill family swung their gazes at Kieran with a strange look in their eyes.
  • Taken aback, Kieran hastily cried out, “You can't simply spout nonsense, sir!”
  • “Mr. Zeller, Mr. Chaucer is Linnell Pharmaceuticals' esteemed guest. He has studied traditional medicine for twenty long years. Would he spout nonsense?” Dorian countered mildly without waiting for the elderly man to speak.
  • Kieran was rendered speechless for a moment. After contemplating silently for two seconds, he riposted resentfully, “That is indeed a piece of trash. My family is also in the pharmaceutical business. Would I not be able to tell?”
  • “If so, tell me what medicinal herbs were used in this pill and their effects.”
  • That simple question from Harold Chaucer had Kieran at a loss for words once more.
  • “Who can tell me the name of the b*stard who destroyed such a miraculous pill?”
  • Harold slowly swept his gaze over the crowd. Everyone could see the raging fury blazing in the depths of his eyes.
  • Everyone present fell silent.
  • Kieran's face flushed bright red, and he said nothing.
  • A moment later, Harold shook his head slightly.
  • “I initially thought that the Quantrill family was a prestigious family, and I happened to be visiting Jadeborough, so I especially came to visit. Unexpectedly, you're all a bunch of ignoramuses who can't appreciate something great! I'm truly disappointed.”
  • He waved a dismissive hand. Cradling the crushed pill in his hands, he spun on his heel and strode out.
  • Dorian mused for two seconds before inquiring, “You said this pill was from a dimwit? Are you referring to the man engaged to your granddaughter?”
  • “Yes, it was him,” Abigail answered with a nod, her gaze blank.
  • “Okay, please excuse me, then. I'll come and visit again another day.”
  • Similarly, Dorian whirled around and walked out.
  • Even after the two men had left, silence reigned in the room.
  • Everyone's thoughts centered on Osmond.
  • Where did that dimwit get such an invaluable pill that even Mr. Chaucer, Linnell Pharmaceuticals' esteemed guest, regards as a priceless treasure?
  • Sensing that the atmosphere wasn't quite right, the members of the wealthy families in Jadeborough got to their feet and took their leave as well.
  • Soon, only the Quantrills and Kieran were left in the room.
  • “Ahem. I think Mr. Chaucer must have been mistaken. Based on my experience, even if that pill isn't detrimental, it'll only be able to improve one's overall health at most.”
  • Kieran cleared his throat and gave a forced explanation.
  • Despite his clarification, the members of the Quantrill family each had their own thoughts about it.
  • “Let's put this aside for the time being!” Abigail ordered with a wave of her hand after frowning for a long while.
  • “What about my offer to marry Constance, Old Mrs. Quantrill?” Kieran queried again, touching the tip of his nose.
  • “Let me ask Constance for her opinion first,” Abigail uttered, waving a dismissive hand.
  • Right then, she suddenly felt that perhaps there was really more to Osmond than met the eye.
  • Therefore, she could only drag her feet about Kieran's request before she got to the bottom of things.
  • “Sure!”
  • Kieran was chagrined, but his expression remained unchanged.
  • Continue acting all high and mighty! When I've bagged Constance, I'm going to devour the whole of the Quantrill family!
  • At Jadeborough Lake, Constance wheeled Osmond for a stroll by the lake.
  • “Osmond, you could've given nothing at all. But why did you use such a thing as a gift?” Constance muttered as she gazed out at the lake, slowly coming to a stop.
  • Her eyes brimmed with grievance and desolation.
  • “The pill I gifted is really something incredible. Alas, they're ignorant to its worth.”
  • Osmond stared at her, his tone as solemn as ever.
  • However, Constance shook her head imperceptibly and sighed inwardly.
  • He has been a dimwit for two years and remained in a wheelchair for the same duration. What incredible thing could he have? Xavier is right. If he really had a miraculous pill, why didn't he use it to cure his own disability first?
  • “The Quantrill family has been dissatisfied with you in the first place. After this incident, their dissatisfaction toward you will only mount. You won't be able to remain at the Quantrill residence anymore, you know?”
  • Constance slowly turned to him, her eyes shimmering with tears.
  • Bitterness and anguish were buried deep within them.
  • At that very instant, Osmond's heart twisted painfully.
  • I didn't do anything wrong, but her grievances stemmed from me. On the day of her grandmother's birthday banquet, she was kicked out in front of all the guests. I could only imagine her humiliation at being given the boot and having to wheel her crippled fiancé away.
  • “I don't care what the Quantrill family thinks of me. You're the only reason I'm staying at the Quantrill residence,” he announced, extending his hand out with his eyes fixated on her.
