Chapter 5 What Kind Of Position

  • “Osmond's surname is Lestrange, too. Could he be related to that person?”
  • The moment those words escaped Kieran's lips, Flora let out a mocking laugh. “If Osmond's really related to that kind of person, I'll gladly kneel before him and beg him to be the Quantrill family's son-in-law.”
  • Her expression was filled with disdain, and her tone was sarcastic.
  • “Then, what kind of position does he have in the army? I don't think he's that simple.”
  • As the eldest son of the Zeller family, Kieran was, naturally, more far-sighted as compared to Flora.
  • “Position? What kind of nonsense are you talking about? Even if he's a retired soldier, after a few years in the army, he'll have at least hundreds of thousands worth of assets after retiring, don't you think? Surprise, surprise. Not only is he dressed poorly, has a worn-out sword, and has a filthy-looking box, but his bank account is also empty. There's a box of needles in it too. I'm starting to wonder if he did embroidery when he was serving in the army. Tell me. What kind of position could he possibly have?”
  • At first, Kieran was stunned by Flora's words. It did not take long for him to burst out laughing. “You're right. No matter how useless a soldier is, the soldier will surely be given some compensation for getting discharged. He, on the other hand, has absolutely nothing. I bet he's just someone who feeds the animals. Hah. Looks like I was worried about nothing.”
  • Feeling relieved, Kieran burst into hearty laughter.
  • Flora glanced at Kieran and uttered what the latter desired to hear the most, saying, “Don't worry. He's useless even if he has recovered now. I'll come up with something to get rid of him. After that, you can come to the Quantrill residence to ask for Constance's hand in marriage.”
  • “That's great!” Kieran cheered. He rubbed his hands excitedly, asking, “So, what shall we do next?”
  • “He and Constance are only bound by a marriage contract. They're not legally married yet. Back then, Constance decided to accept him only because she pitied him. Now that he's recovered, he cannot stay in the Quantrill residence anymore. Old Mrs. Quantrill's birthday is in two days. During that time, I'll bring up this matter in front of everyone in the Quantrill family. Constance will have no choice but to accept my proposal, no matter what she thinks.” Flora scoffed, sounding extremely confident.
  • “All right. I shall await your good news, then. Hehe!” Kieran rubbed his hands repeatedly, looking thrilled.
  • Needless to say, Flora was more than pleased with Kieran.
  • After all, the Zeller family Kieran belonged to was well-known in Jadeborough.
  • If the Quantrill family could become in-laws with the Zeller family, the Quantrills would definitely regain their previous glory.
  • Meanwhile, Flora would become the greatest contributor to the Quantrill family's success.
  • Two days later, the birthday party was held at Luxury Hotel in Jadeborough.
  • “May the heavens bless the Quantrill family for centuries!”
  • The high-end private room was filled with members of the Quantrill family.
  • It was the matriarch of the Quantrill family, Abigail Vaughn's seventieth birthday that day. Naturally, every member of the Quantrill family came to attend the party.
  • The Quantrills weren't the only ones who attended. Some big shots from other prominent families in Jadeborough also came.
  • Despite the Quantrill family's downfall and ruined reputation ever since Logan's death in the war, they were still mightier than the others and were well-respected.
  • At that moment, Abigail was sitting at the head of the main table. The surrounding tables were packed with people.
  • “Sorry for being late, Grandma...”
  • Suddenly, the door opened, and Constance walked into the room, pushing Osmond, who was in a wheelchair.
  • “Wow. Turns out you remembered to come over, eh? I thought someone had forgotten all about Grandma's birthday.” Constance's cousin, Bethany Quantrill, rolled her eyes.
  • Bethany was jealous of Constance's beauty. Hence, she hated the latter since they were young.
  • Another descendant of the Quantrill family, Xavier Quantrill, pursed his lips and chimed in as well, uttering, “Heh. I totally agree with the saying that we shouldn't forget our roots. Where would we be if not for Grandma? Then again, I'm afraid some people have already forgotten theirs.”
  • In an instant, the Quantrills launched into a heated discussion, most of them berating Constance, all except for Abigail and Constance's parents.
  • They didn't care even if some members from the other prestigious families were present in the room.
  • Ever since the Quantrill family took in the crippled and mentally disabled Osmond two years ago, they had become the laughingstock of Jadeborough.
  • Ultimately, Osmond was the reason for all the ridicule they received.
  • “Grandma, Osmond has a hard time moving around. That's why we got delayed—” Constance explained gently.
  • Abigail waved her hand to cut Constance off, saying plainly, “Take a seat.”
  • “We weren't planning to wait for you guys, anyway,” Bethany added softly, stroking her nails that were embellished with diamonds.
  • Constance lowered her head slightly but still walked into the room, pushing Osmond's wheelchair.
  • “Hey, I just realized this. You actually brought the dimwit, too?” someone from the Quantrill family asked in shock. They all looked as if they had just noticed Osmond.
  • “Everyone in the Quantrill family is celebrating Grandma's birthday here today. He can't eat alone at home.” Constance blushed. She felt so awkward and embarrassed, as if she had become a ridiculous clown.
  • Flora stood up from her seat, walked over to Constance, and seethed next to her ear, “Have you lost your mind?”
  • She proceeded to scold Constance under her breath. “Is our family not humiliated enough? How dare you bring him here? It's Old Mrs. Quantrill's birthday today. Many influential people from Jadeborough are here. What is it you're trying to do?”
  • Osmond, who was sitting in his wheelchair, watched the entire situation in silence.
  • Be it the Quantrills or members of the other prestigious families, everyone there stared at Constance and Osmond with distaste.
  • “Haha! What a dimwit.” Xavier sneered.
  • Bursts of laughter rang out in the private room.
  • Flora's face flushed red, while Constance looked like a lonely boat in the middle of a storm, constantly being attacked with criticisms.
  • Suddenly, a voice spoke. “The Quantrill family was once a prestigious family in Jadeborough. Looks like there is indeed a reason that made them a third-rate family.”
