Chapter 6 You Cannot Afford To Take

  • Recovering from their initial shock, the crowd slowly looked in the direction of the voice and fixed their eyes on the person in the wheelchair—Osmond.
  • Meanwhile, Osmond looked calm as he returned their stares fearlessly.
  • Every member of the Quantrill family was dumbfounded.
  • Did the dimwit just talk? Did he just say something that actually made sense?
  • It was at that moment that they realized Osmond was no longer drooling like before.
  • He looked drastically different that day.
  • “W-What did you just say?” Xavier asked carefully, frowning at Osmond.
  • “Are you deaf?” Osmond asked indifferently.
  • “You—” Xavier leaped to his feet and pointed at Osmond.
  • How dare a mere dimwit speak to me like that?
  • By the time the Quantrills and members from the other prominent families in Jadeborough recovered from their shock, they learned something important.
  • Looks like Osmond has returned to his senses. But so what? He's still crippled, isn't he?
  • Bethany snorted coldly and pointed at Osmond right in the nose, questioning, “Osmond, why am I getting the feeling that you despise the Quantrill family based on what you said earlier? We've been providing you with your needs for the past two years. What makes you think you can look down on us? Besides, aren't you the reason our family became Jadeborough's laughingstock?”
  • Osmond eyed Bethany calmly, the corners of his lips lifting into a smirk. “Don't think too highly of yourself. What does your family have to do with Constance's kindness to me?”
  • “How insolent!” Abigail slammed the table and stood up. “Two years ago, the Quantrill family became a joke in Jadeborough all because of you. Now that you're awake, you're not only being ungrateful but also uttering ridiculous statements. It's also because of you that Constance's reputation was ruined. So, tell me. How does that have nothing to do with us?”
  • Osmond fell silent when he heard Abigail's final sentence.
  • She's right. The only person I've let down is Constance.
  • “If it weren't for you, my family would've had a marriage connection with one of Jadeborough's prestigious families already. There's no way we would've gotten to such a state,” Abigail scoffed again, leaving Osmond speechless.
  • Noting Osmond's silence, the crowd smiled wider.
  • “Fine. Since you've already regained your senses and have come to Grandma's birthday celebration, may I know what present you have prepared for her?” Xavier snorted coldly. He was not going to let Osmond off so easily.
  • Constance quickly piped up, “I've prepared—”
  • “Both of you are separate entities. What makes you think you can represent him? Don't forget that both of you aren't married yet, Constance.” Bethany snickered, her gaze filled with mockery.
  • Constance sighed inwardly. Osmond is penniless. What could he possibly give?
  • Right then, Osmond stretched out his hand to reveal a tiny box. “This is my gift for Old Mrs. Quantrill.”
  • The crowd was stunned. Really? Did he actually prepare one?
  • The box in Osmond's hand looked ordinary but had a unique style.
  • “What's this?” Xavier reached out to take it, wanting to open it right away.
  • The others were rather curious, too. What kind of rare item can the dimwit give?
  • “Huh? What's this? Osmond, is this dog poop?” Xavier suddenly exclaimed as he took out a brown pill from the box.
  • As soon as Xavier took out the pill, the whole room was filled with a faint medicinal fragrance.
  • Osmond narrowed his eyes. The “dog poop” Xavier was referring to was sought after by many people in the past.
  • However, Osmond did not bother explaining it since they were too ignorant to know its value.
  • Unable to suppress her curiosity, Constance asked, “Osmond, what's that?”
  • “It's a pill. I heard your grandma is suffering from a stubborn illness. Taking this pill will cure her completely,” Osmond explained softly.
  • Everyone was stunned by his words. Immediately after that, they burst into a fit of laughter.
  • “Haha! Just when I thought he had recovered. Not only has he not recovered, but he has turned from a dimwit into a madman.”
  • “Do you think you're some divine physician from a legend?”
  • “Hah. How brave of you to claim that the pill can cure her. Why don't you treat yourself, then? Haha!”
  • Xavier, Bethany, and a few members of the Quantrill family scoffed.
  • “Watch your words! You guys are going too far!” Constance scolded the crowd, her eyes burning with rage.
  • “Constance, they're just telling the truth. He's a cripple, after all. I dare not consume pills given by him.” Abigail slowly waved her hand as her eyes flashed with disdain.
  • The crowd roared with laughter again.
  • A laughingstock would always be a laughingstock, no matter what situation they were in.
  • Just then, Kieran strode into the private room with two bodyguards in black following behind him. “Happy birthday, Old Mrs. Quantrill. I wish you a long and healthy life. I, on behalf of the Zeller family, would like to give you a top-quality emerald. May all your wishes come true.”
  • Kieran was dressed in an expensive suit, which showed that he took Abigail's birthday party seriously.
  • “Oh my. Mr. Zeller is here! Please have a seat.”
  • Immediately, everyone in the Quantrill family rose to their feet and greeted him warmly.
  • That included the members of prominent families in Jadeborough. Many of them stood up to welcome him, completely ignoring Osmond and Constance.
  • Though Abigail was trying hard to hold her emotions in check, her gaze glinted with excitement.
  • Kieran might have arrived much later than Osmond, but the way both of them were treated was a world of difference.
  • The Zeller family was an upstart and one of the most prestigious families in Jadeborough.
  • If the Quantrill family could build a good relationship with the Zeller family, it would bring the former great help.
  • “Kieran, you're here!” Bethany smiled sweetly and pushed Constance aside.
  • Kieran, however, ignored her. Instead, he turned around and greeted Constance.
  • Not wanting to offend him, Constance had no choice but to nod in acknowledgment.
  • “Aren't... Aren't you Osmond? Why are you letting Constance push you around? Are you here for a free meal?” Kieran clapped his hands, eyeing Osmond with disdain. He even emphasized the words “push you around” on purpose.
  • “If you're smart enough, you'd leave my things untouched. There are some things you can't afford to take,” Osmond commented calmly, staring back at Kieran.
