Chapter 8 The Homewrecker Strikes Back

  • Lara’s hands trembled. Isn’t this woman Eric’s lover? she thought. She explained, “I did nothing wrong, Mr. Cook. I operated on the patient according to the normal surgical procedures. Besides, I did remind the patient to look out for post-op infection after the surgery.” Had she known this to be the outcome, Lara would have removed that homewrecker’s entire womb during that surgery. She was astounded by how Sandy had so shamelessly returned kindness with ingratitude after stealing her husband.
  • However, Kevin replied, “You should know what a doctor is most afraid of, especially when you’re about to be elected as associate professor. Now how should I deal with this with so many doctors at our hospital watching?”
  • “Please don’t worry about it, Mr. Cook. I’m confident that I’ve done nothing wrong during the surgery,” Lara said while clutching the court’s notice in her hand.
  • Kevin’s expression eased a lot at Lara’s assurance. “You’ve been a doctor for so many years, so you should know how important a doctor’s integrity is. I’ve applied to our hospital’s board to revoke your candidacy for the position of associate professor this year. As for this matter, the hospital’s investigation team will look into it, so please wait for the hospital’s notice.”
  • The announcement hit Lara like a bolt from the blue. Such an outcome was too hard for her to bear. It was such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a doctor to be qualified for election to a professorship, yet she lost it so easily. “Please let me explain, Mr. Cook…” She tried to explain herself, only to be kicked out of the office by Kevin. In the end, she had no choice but to accept Kevin’s arrangement.
  • Lara hated Eric’s guts deep down inside. She knew right off the top of her head that Sandy must have done that because Eric told her to.
  • She went to Ward 808 and took a glance at Damian’s son, who was soundly asleep. Suddenly, she said, “I’ve been suspended from duty by the hospital.” She turned around and looked at Damian before suddenly letting out a sneer. As her black eyes stared intently into Damian’s, she continued with a hint of wryness and helplessness on her face, “I’ll take up your offer, but on one condition: help me get a divorce. I want him and that woman to have nothing to their name and lose all standing and reputation.”
  • Damian felt like he had caught a glimpse of the woman’s ruthlessness as he stared at Lara’s palm-sized face, the skin of which was as fair and smooth as porcelain. Somehow, her stubborn expression struck him as familiar. He withdrew his gaze and took a look at the boy sleeping on the bed. “I have another condition in addition to that offer. Take good care of my son. His recovery depends on you.”
  • Is he treating me as his son’s mobile blood bank? Not that it matters to me, though, Lara thought. She nodded without the slightest hesitation. “Okay.”
  • Damian brought her back to a mansion called Olmian Court. The white balustrades surrounding the mansion stood under the blue sky, forming a beautiful scenery, while the black marble flooring reflected Lara’s slender figure.
  • Lara handed her suitcase to the maid. As she glanced up at the ornate crystal chandelier over her head, she felt everything before her eyes was like a dream.
  • “You’ll be staying on the second floor.” Damian handed the suit jacket he had taken off to the woman in front of him. Then, he turned to look at Lara. “This is Colette Burns, the butler here.”
  • Colette’s gaze fell on Lara, and her black eyes flickered as she gave Lara a gentle smile.
  • Damian then said, “Lara will be in charge of taking care of Carter from now on.”
  • Lara studied the quiet and graceful woman before her. She looked about the same age as Lara, and it was obvious that she eyed Lara with hostility the first time she laid eyes on her. Though she concealed it very well, Lara, who was also a woman, noticed it nevertheless. So Colette likes Damian, huh? she thought.
  • Colette then led Lara to the second floor. Lara’s room was on the left side of the stairs, far from Damian’s, which was on the right. Lara was satisfied with this arrangement, but she couldn’t help feeling that Colette seemed to have arranged for this on purpose.
  • Colette led Lara to her room. “Please unpack first, Ms. Sullivan. I’ll be preparing for this evening’s dinner,” she said, with no intention of getting on well with Lara. Then, she turned around and left.
  • Lara tugged her suitcase into the room before hanging her clothes, one by one, in the closet. Then, she turned around and entered the bathroom. After taking a shower, she came out wrapped in a bath towel while wiping her long hair dry with another. Beads of water dripped from the tip of her hair, wetting her collarbone and flowing into her cleavage as a layer of lovely pinkness showed through her fair skin.
  • She took out a change of clothes and put them on before finally sensing that something was amiss. When she turned around, she saw Damian leaning languidly against the door frame behind her. As his gaze fell brazenly on her breasts, something flickered in those cold and deep black eyes of his…
