• Preston drove Kate home. Gray had been a perfect gentleman throughout the meal, though there was a simmering hostility between him and the Thornes. She had no idea what could have caused it. Sometimes Thorne International and SDS bid on the same projects, but surely that could not be the reason.
• The moment Gray had excused himself from the table after the meal was over, Preston had dragged her out. He had not even given her a chance to say goodbye to anyone except her family and Vivian. Once they had gotten into the car, he had not said anything. The ride home passed in silence. He had not even turned the radio on.
