Chapter 48 The Cold Shoulder

  • The gossip reminded me of Roy’s glacial look, as if he didn’t know me at all. When he brushed past me, I caught a scent of tobacco. Although I was aware of his smoking habit, I believed he was not a smoke addict. Nevertheless, the strong tobacco smell that stayed on his suit implied that he might have smoked more than he usually did.
  • Why did he smoke so much? Did he get upset and depressed after I exposed him yesterday? At the thought of that, I somehow regretted my action the day before, thinking I went a little too far by attacking his soft spot. After all, everyone had a secret buried within them, which they wished no one knew about, yet all I did was use his secret against him to break him. Besides hurting his feelings, I was also reminded of how I hurt him physically by slapping him in the face. In hindsight, I got mad at myself for my recklessness and selfish desire to do as I pleased, questioning myself whether what I did to Roy was indeed necessary.
  • After a brief reflection on my actions, I admitted that I was capricious and headstrong, thanks to my upbringing. Since I was the only daughter in the family, my parents treated me like the apple of their eye, doting on me so much that I could just cry and get anything I wanted. Then, I remembered wanting to marry Ben because he treated me well, and my parents supported my decision without any objection. Because of that, I started to take everything for granted and acted on my impulse more often, even though I would reflect on my actions in hindsight.
