• The officers tried to take Ella’s statement, but the poor girl was so traumatized that other than mentioning that Malia’s best friend, Sarah, whose real name had turned to be Susan had been behind everything, she could not say anything else and began to shiver and cry again.
• I knelt down beside Ella, placing a reassuring hand on her tiny shoulder. Her sobs were soft but heartbreaking, the kind of sound that tore right through you. Malia crouched beside me, her arms wrapping around Ella, whispering soothing words, though I could see the strain in her eyes. It was clear that the little girl had been through more than she could process, and forcing her to relive any of it now would only make things worse.
