• "What do you mean?". I glanced at Jake, and then Victoria. Then back to Jake again. "What are you talking about?". I asked him. My voice came out hoarse, almost lost as I turned to Jake. My eyes too were wide, hoping he wasn't saying what I thought he was saying.
• But Jake wasn't looking at me now. His gaze was fixed on Victoria. And his face was visibly pale with frustration. Victoria smirked as if she was waiting for this moment. She sat back in her chair and crossed her arms with that same superior air she'd always had.
