• "Alright," he responded with hesitation, and his phone beeped again. To my surprise, he leaned forward and pressed a kiss on my right cheek before walking out and closing the door behind him.
• I stood rooted to the spot for many seconds after he left. Slade never showed that much affection with me. My fingers reached up to caress the spot he'd just kissed and a smile spread slowly across my lips. Did this mean that we were actually progressing? Was there any chance that he was finally going to acknowledge me or was he being sweet to me because I was carrying his heir?
• The thought was enough to wipe out the smile from my face. Of course, that was the reason, stupid me! I shook my head and picked up my clothes scattered around the living room, depositing them in the pile of unwashed clothes as I headed for the shower.
