• Mom surprised us by coming home earlier than we thought she would; we were expecting her in two weeks, but there she was, lounging on the couch. I let out a big sigh as I settled down next to her. "You didn’t mention Ian was here, and neither did Dad," she said, intertwining her fingers with mine. "I saw him when I got in this afternoon, but we didn’t get a chance to chat."
• Mom had a soft spot for Ian, treating him like her own kid, which was pretty rare for stepmoms. She loved hanging out with him because he always brought a smile to her face. "I figured Dad would have filled you in," I replied, glancing at her. "But why are you back so soon? You were supposed to be gone for another two weeks."
