Mu Zhi opened the group chat and was bombarded by the flurry of texts. ‘The job’s great, but my mom’s coming to visit me in town soon. I haven’t seen her in a while, apologies, I can’t be away for the month.’
‘I want to go too, but I have unfinished tasks in my hands, and I have to deal with the clients personally.’ Another colleague brought up.
Followed by another one, ‘Boss, I wish to take leave. I don’t feel so well, I’ve been getting frequent headaches.’
‘I need to take care of my kid.’
Every text read like made-up excuses to refuse the job. Mu Zhi wondered what happened. She scrolled up to read the earlier messages. She found out that the company's executive planned to write an article of the Hope Junior School in the mountain villages. A reporter had to be assigned to Village S and the manager was looking for a volunteer.
Mu Zhi looked at the list of responses to find that some had the heart to reply, but others ghosted the text completely.
