Chapter 5 Coming to Steal His Wife
- The one at the door was none other than Roman. But as soon as Elowen answered the door, she shut it again, much to his dismay.
- So, he continued to knock on the door, and a voice angrily shouted, "You filthy beggar, how dare you come begging in an upscale neighborhood? Who let you in?!"
- As the voice fell, a young man in a black suit with a slicked-back look approached. This young man was somewhat handsome, but his face carried an air of arrogance. His name was Brody Zito, also a rich scion. Although his wealth might not match Dominic's, he was still a millionaire.
- He was also a fervent pursuer of Giselle and considered himself her second-choice suitor, after Dominic, whose legs were already broken by Roman and who had received an urn from him.
- Originally, when Brody heard that Giselle was to be married off to Dominic, he lost all hope in life. But that afternoon, when he heard from a friend that Dominic had his legs broken and suffered a concussion, he saw it as his chance. It was the perfect opportunity to pursue Giselle while Dominic was vulnerable. So, he dressed up and came over, only to find a homeless man knocking on Giselle's door.
- Roman glanced at him but said nothing, continuing to knock on the door.
- "Hey, hobo, are you deaf? Stop knocking and get lost!" Brody yelled at Roman.
- "I'm knocking on my wife's door. What's it to you?" Roman turned to Brody nonchalantly.
- "Wait, what?! Your wife's door? You… You're that loser son-in-law?! Haven't you died out there? What are you doing back?!" Brody was quite shocked.
- Roman took another gander at him without paying him any mind and continued to knock on the door.
- Suddenly, the door swung open, and a voice of curse came out. "Enough knocking, you jinx! Do you have a death wish?!"
- "Mom…"
- "Don't call me Mom. You're not my son-in-law! That loser of a son-in-law's already dead to me three years ago!" Elowen angrily shouted.
- "Good evening, Mrs. Chaplin." Brody's eyes lit up when he saw Elowen's hostile attitude toward Roman, and he hurriedly approached, sweetly calling out.
- "Oh, Brody, you're here too! Come in, come in." Elowen, seeing Brody, immediately beamed and invited him in.
- Brody glanced triumphantly at Roman and muttered under his breath, "Worthless!"
- Seeing this scene, Roman felt a tightness in his chest. He was the Chaplin's live-in son-in-law, yet he was treated worse than an outsider. However, it was Brody's "worthless" that really stung him.
- Meanwhile, as Elowen invited Brody inside, she shot Roman a nasty glance. "Don't you try coming in!"
- With that, she attempted to close the door, but Giselle's voice came from inside. "Mom, what are you doing? Why won't you let Roman in?"
- "Why should I? He's a loser and a jinx! He should've died out there long ago!" Elowen venomously replied.
- Knowing her mother was being unreasonable, Giselle didn't want to argue further and turned to Roman, saying, "You come on in too."
- Seeing that his wife invited him in, Roman felt touched, and the indignation he felt moments ago dispelled instantly.
- "Alright." He beamed and entered the house.
- "Oh my gosh! Roman, how did you disappear for three years and end up looking worse and becoming a beggar?" Bella exclaimed in surprise, jumping off the sofa. After all, Roman's current appearance was indeed a bit wild.
- "That loser has always been a loser. He must've mysteriously disappeared for three years to beg on the streets!" Elowen sneered disdainfully. Even Napoleon frowned at Roman, his expression unfriendly.
- Elowen warmly entertained Brody, serving him refreshments, being very attentive. As for Roman, he was pushed aside, left alone.
- Seeing that Roman seemed a bit… pitiful, Giselle fetched him a small and handed him a bottle of water.
- Brody was a smooth talker, repeatedly calling out "Mrs. Chaplin," which made Elowen beam with joy. However, his eyes never left Giselle…
- "Mrs. Chaplin, I heard Dominic got beaten up by some idiot, broke both legs, and even got a concussion. Even if he recovers, he'll be disabled! In my opinion, Giselle shouldn't marry Dominic!" Brody said, his eyes shifting.
- "What? Dominic got beaten up and has a concussion?! Who did it?!" Elowen exclaimed in surprise.
- Giselle sat in the corner, her gaze shifting toward Roman, who happened to be the culprit.
- Roman's eyes met hers, a gentle smile on his lips.
- "I don't know who did it, Mrs. Chaplin, but Dominic having a concussion means he's no longer worthy of Giselle!" Brody said.
- "Naturally. My daughter is the most beautiful girl in the city. How could someone with a concussion be worthy of her? As for you, Brody, you have the looks, stature, and manners, and you have a good family background. You're much more reliable than Dominic or a certain loser!" Elowen said, sneaking a glance at Roman, taunting him.
- "Do you really think so, Mrs. Chaplin? Thank you for your approval. Since Dominic is disabled now, why not marry Giselle to me?! If you agree, I'll immediately present a dowry of one million!
- "And I can also help the Chaplin Family's business out of trouble! I actually have an uncle who currently holds a position as vice president at Christopher & Co. I can talk to him and get the Chaplin Family some multimillion-dollar orders! Mrs. Chaplin! Please grant my wish!"
- Brody knelt sincerely right before Elowen with a thud.
- "Brodie, get up quickly…" Elowen said, pleased.
- "Mrs. Chaplin, if you don't agree, I won't get up!"
- "You…"
- Brody quickly took out a check from his pocket and handed it to Elowen. Elowen, seeing it was indeed a million-dollar check, felt a surge of greed…
- Meanwhile, Giselle watched the scene coldly, her gaze shifting to Roman. Now that someone was desperate to steal her away, she deliberately kept silent, wanting to see Roman's reaction. After all, this had happened too many times in the past three years.
- Bella also looked at Roman, her eyes filled with disdain, muttering, "What a loser. People have come to your door to steal your wife, yet you remain unfazed.'
- Seeing the check and thinking of Brody's potential help for the Chaplin Family, Elowen subconsciously reached out to accept it.
- "Mom, you can't accept the check." At that moment, Roman spoke up, and Giselle's eyes immediately lit up with hope.
