Chapter 7
- Alex’s POV
- That night, back at the Miller's mansion, it suddenly occurred to me that the last time I saw Emily was three months ago.
- She had lost so much weight.
- But she brought it upon herself.
- If she hadn't been jealous of Holly, always seeking attention by playing the victim, she probably wouldn't have ended up like this.
- Ethan clearly shared my thoughts.
- He impatiently loosened his tie as soon as he entered the door, angrily reporting today's events to Mrs. Miller.
- "Mom, Emily went to the hospital."
- "Oh? Is she really taking care of Holly?"
- "She's not obedient at all! She's not taking care of her! She went there to cause trouble again! She took a few sleeping pills and went to fight with Holly for the doctor, causing Holly to be kicked out by the doctor."
- At this moment, Holly frowned and walked inside, and as soon as she saw her mother, she couldn't help but burst into tears.
- "Mom, I'm sorry. I dirtied the dress you gave me. When my sister vomited on me, I didn't have time to dodge. I'm really sorry; I'm so clumsy."
- Mrs. Miller, seeing Holly's dirty appearance, hurriedly put down the teacup in her hand and ran over, stomping her feet in distress.
- "Oh my god! I spent a hundred thousand dollars customizing a dress for Holly from Paris. I prepared a gift for a year, and it was ruined like this!"
- "Emily is just a jinx who causes trouble. It's disgusting!"
- As if recalling something, she suddenly said, "Every time she comes home recently, she keeps vomiting! Always eating some mysterious supplements and dirtying the carpet with her vomit. I was so angry that I had to whip her with a cane and kick her out."
- Upon hearing this, I couldn't help but stand frozen in place.
- I blurted out, "Today the doctor said Emily has lung cancer..."
- Before I could finish, Holly suddenly looked at me, interrupting my words.
- "Alex, you're tired. Go and rest early."
- I had never seen that look in her eyes before. She raised her chin and stared at me, full of warning and threat.
- For a moment, I doubted if I had seen it wrong.
- The next moment, she strangely took Mrs. Miller's hand and coquettishly said, "Mom, can we take a bath together? I want to tell you about today's celebration."
- Ethan kept muttering about bad luck and turned to go to the study to handle work.
- It seemed like everyone felt that the day was already done.
- But Emily's weak face and hollow eyes kept appearing in my mind.
- I rubbed my temples in frustration.
- When I realized what I was doing, I was already standing at the door of Emily's attic.
- She must be lying. Yeah, that's right. She just wanted to get my attention!
- So, I need to find evidence and expose her lies.
- This reason comforted me, and I angrily pushed open Emily's door.
- A musty, dusty smell immediately hit me.
- I was stunned.
- I had never been in her room before. I always thought her room was like Holly's.
- I never expected that in the luxurious Miller mansion, there would be such a narrow, dim, and stuffy room.
- And on the table, there was a paper with a conspicuous bloodstain—all dried up and so dark that the red looked like black.
- In that moment, something in my mind quietly collapsed.
- Trembling, I picked up the diagnosis, and the last line of words came into my line of vision.
- [Terminal lung cancer, three months left.]
- "How...how could this be true..."
- Suddenly, I saw that striking string of numbers—the diagnosis date.
- This short string of numbers made my eyes ache.
- It was the day she saw me and Holly making love.
- It was the day she suddenly coughed up blood and fainted.
- It was also the day I completely abandoned her.
- A huge sense of guilt surrounded me tightly, making it hard for me to breathe.
- I felt like my lungs were burning, and the pain was so intense that I couldn't lift my head. But compared to her pain, I probably didn't even feel one-tenth of it.
- I didn't know how long I was struck by this news before I managed to calm down a bit.
- I went downstairs with the diagnosis and saw Mrs. Miller and Holly in the living room, happily counting the gifts received at the celebration banquet.
- Holly was still so elegant, lovely, and beautiful.
- But at this moment, I remembered Emily's simple yet captivating face from three years ago.
- I knew she had always loved me, using any means to get my attention.
- But she was really dying after all. Even if I hated her, I couldn't let her die alone.
- I took out the report and walked towards Mrs. Miller.
- "Everyone, I have something to show you."
