• The morning sun slipped through the tall pines, gilding the camp in soft light. Smoke from the breakfast fires curled lazily upward, carrying the smell of grilled bread and eggs. Sterling employees shuffled toward the dining area in clusters, voices buzzing with excitement and groans of tiredness.
• Seraphina stretched as she stepped out of Nicholas’s tent, trying desperately to look normal even though her entire night had been anything but. She hadn’t slept well,not because of the bed, which was ridiculously comfortable, but because Nicholas had been right there. Every shift of his body, every breath he took, she’d been painfully aware of it.
