Chapter 3 The Light Of Anger

  • One year later.
  • Dali had moved in with her friend Celyn in a neighboring pack. She couldn’t stand how badly her parents treated her—it drove her crazy.
  • “Celyn, I heard this pack needs a new maid,” Dali said, casually knitting. “I’m thinking of applying. Maybe I’ll finally get to see this heartless Alpha everyone keeps talking about.”
  • “You what?!” Celyn nearly choked, her voice sharp with shock. “What the hell are you thinking?”
  • Dali blinked at her. “What was that for?”
  • “Do you even know who he is?” Celyn snapped. “That man is a walking storm of grief. You’re not from his pack. Actually—do you even belong to any pack? You’re over eighteen, and you still don’t have a wolf. Are you even a werewolf, Dali?”
  • Each word hit harder than the last. Dali’s shoulders slumped. The last thing she expected her friend to do was make vocal her biggest insecurity.
  • “No… I’m not a werewolf,” she murmured. “But I’m still alive. I still have blood running through my veins.”
  • Celyn sighed, guilt creeping into her expression. “I didn’t mean it like that. It’s just… this Alpha doesn’t tolerate any mistakes. Please be careful.”
  • “I’ll be fine,” Dali said quietly, calmly placing what she had been knitting away. She grabbed her bag and opened the front door. “I don’t want to be late for the interview.”
  • She smiled softly and walked out.
  • Celyn shook her head and muttered under her breath, “Dali, when will you ever learn?” She called after her, but Dali had already disappeared down the road.
  • Dali practically skipped as she made her way toward the pack house. Her excitement bubbled inside her. If she had wings, she would’ve flown straight there. Walking just didn’t feel fast enough.
  • When she reached the grand estate that bordered the Alpha’s castle, two guards stepped in her path.
  • “What do you want?” one asked.
  • “My name is Dali Greene. I’m here about the maid position. I want to work here,” she said, standing tall.
  • The second guard raised a brow. “And what makes you think you’ll get the job?”
  • Dali smiled calmly. “It’s an open position. So yeah… I think I’ve got a shot.”
  • The guards exchanged glances, then slowly stepped aside. “Go ahead.”
  • “Thank you!” she beamed and walked in.
  • “You must be here for the interview,” a man’s voice called from behind her.
  • She turned to find a tall man with a clipboard. He looked like someone who managed staff or ran errands.
  • “Yes,” she replied.
  • “Follow me.”
  • She did, and he led her into a room packed with she-wolves.
  • “Wow,” Dali muttered under her breath. “Guess I’m not the only one dying to see the Alpha.”
  • “Take a seat,” the man said, pointing to an empty chair. Then he left, likely to bring in more applicants.
  • Dali glanced around, amazed. “This place is gorgeous,” she whispered. She had never been inside the pack house before. The stories didn’t do it justice. Everything was polished and glowing. She couldn’t help but wonder: Is the Alpha really as good-looking as they say?
  • And was he the one doing the interviews?
  • She craned her neck, trying to catch a glimpse of the room ahead, but she couldn’t see anything.
  • “If he were here, it wouldn’t be this quiet,” she muttered.
  • Where is he?
  • Curiosity got the better of her. She glanced around—no guards. Her turn hadn’t come yet, so she quietly got up and tiptoed out into the halls, grinning like a child sneaking cookies.
  • “Let’s see what secrets you’re hiding, Mr. Alpha,” she whispered.
  • She slipped through the halls, ducking past maids, sneaking into room after room. She peered around like a thief in a palace until she stopped in front of a large, tightly shut door.
  • “This has to be it,” she whispered.
  • She opened the door—but the room was empty.
  • She turned to leave but paused. Something tugged at her, urging her to step inside again.
  • This time, she walked in fully and looked around in awe. “This place is… beautiful. Like heaven on Earth.”
  • No doubt, this was his room. The decor screamed power and elegance. She sat on the bed and sank into the soft mattress with a blissful sigh.
  • “Yup. This is definitely the Alpha’s room,” she whispered, grinning.
  • But then, nerves hit her. What if this isn’t his room? What if I get caught? She stood up quickly and began to tiptoe out—but her foot clipped the table.
  • Crash!
  • A glass fell and shattered on the floor.
  • In a nearby room, Alpha Chase’s ears perked up. He heard the noise and stormed toward the sound. He stepped into the room just as someone tried to make a run for it.
  • “Stop right there!” he commanded.
  • Dali froze.
  • “Who are you?” he demanded, his tone sharp and commanding.
  • She turned around slowly. The moment she saw him—really saw him—something stirred in her chest. Her breath caught.
  • So this was the Alpha. The man everyone whispered about. And they were right—he was handsome. Beautiful, even.
  • She stared at him, wide-eyed, unable to speak. Alpha Chase narrowed his eyes, furious that someone had dared to break into his private space.
  • “I asked you a question. What are you doing here?”
  • “I… I came for the interview,” she said. “I got lost.”
  • His jaw clenched. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done? This area is off-limits to outsiders—especially maids. Are you stupid?”
  • “I—”
  • “Guards!” he barked.
  • Dali gasped. No. If they threw her out, she’d never get another chance.
  • “Please, don’t throw me out,” she begged. “Please!”
  • “Take her away,” he ordered coldly.
  • The guards grabbed her arms and began to drag her away. She kept her eyes on him, silently pleading. He looked away—then back at her—and suddenly, something shifted.
  • A spark. Unexpected and sharp.
  • Alpha Chase froze.
  • That spark. That pull.
  • It couldn’t be. It had been a year. He hadn’t felt this since—
  • “Is this some kind of joke?” he whispered to himself.
