- “Watch your back,” the masked man muttered, his voice gritty like gravel soaked in gasoline as if he’d been inhaling smoke his entire life. He didn’t even glance at me. His presence was heavy enough, like a stink that wouldn’t wash off. He turned away with his boots dragging slightly on the floor. Each thud sounded like a gavel slamming down.
