Chapter 7

  • After three days in the ICU, I was transferred to the VIP ward.
  • I was so weak, like a puddle of water, couldn't even lift my hand, relying on painkillers and nutrients to keep me alive.
  • Jasper almost stayed by my bedside every day, the red blood vessels in his eyes clearly visible.
  • He wasn't as cold as before, there was a hint of indescribable emotion in his eyes when he looked at me.
  • "Audrey, do you remember when we first started our business?"
  • He sat by the bed, speaking softly as if afraid to disturb me,
  • "At that time, we squeezed into a ten-square-meter rental house, no heating in winter, you wrapped in a blanket helping me revise the business plan, your hands were so red from the cold but you wouldn't stop."
  • "And on your birthday, I didn't have money to buy a gift, so I made a cake out of cardboard, but you laughed so happily, saying it was the best gift you ever received."
  • He rambled on about the past, full of regret in his tone:
  • "It's all my fault, I got too busy later on, neglected you, and did things that hurt you. Can you give me another chance? When you get better, let's start over."
  • I listened with my eyes closed, feeling nothing but irony.
  • These memories that he had long forgotten were now being used as tools for his "repentance."
  • After a while, I slowly opened my eyes, staring blankly at the ceiling, my voice weak but clear:
  • "Is Vanessa's child... okay?"
  • Jasper's voice suddenly stopped, the grip on my hand tightening instantly.
  • The "affection" on his face froze, the color draining away, leaving him pale.
  • He opened his mouth, but couldn't say a word, only awkwardly avoiding my gaze.
  • Watching his flustered state, a faint smile tugged at the corner of my mouth, fleeting.
  • In the afternoon, Simon came to check on me, Jasper hurriedly approached him, his voice urgent:
  • "Simon, how is she doing? When will she get better?"
  • Simon sighed, his tone heavy:
  • "Jasper, you need to be prepared. Audrey's condition has reached a critical stage, she could be in danger at any moment, all we can do is try to alleviate her pain."
  • Jasper's body swayed, as if he couldn't stand steady, disbelief in his eyes:
  • "How... you said the surgery was successful, didn't you?"
  • "That was just to relieve symptoms, not a cure."
  • Simon shook his head, "The Red Cross organ coordinator is already on standby at the hospital. If there is an emergency, they will intervene immediately."
  • Jasper was puzzled, "Coordinator? What coordinator?"
  • "Just a routine plan for critically ill patients, to ensure timely response to emergencies."
  • Simon didn't say much, following my instructions, he never mentioned the organ donation.
  • Jasper didn't ask any more questions, but the panic on his face worsened.
  • He sat in a chair in the corner of the ward, hands in his hair, exuding a sense of confusion and panic.
  • I turned my head and watched the sunset outside the window slowly sinking, dyeing half the sky red.
  • The smell of death was getting closer, but I was unusually calm.
  • When the nurse came in to change the IV drip, she said softly:
  • "Jasper, you've been here for several days, go back and rest, we're here."
  • Jasper shook his head, his voice hoarse, "I'm not going back, I'll stay here with her."
