Chapter 6
- Three days after the express delivery was sent out, Jasper's company exploded.
- Audrey learned from Mr. Lyons's phone call that several senior executives took the photos and itinerary and directly slammed the table at the board meeting.
- They questioned Jasper, "Will personal misconduct affect the company's reputation?"
- Several planned collaborations suddenly postponed signing, throwing the entire company into chaos.
- That night, when Jasper kicked the door open and stormed in, his eyes were filled with crimson rage.
- "Was it you?!"
- He grabbed Audrey by the collar and forcefully pushed her against the wall.
- "Did you send those things to the shareholders? Audrey, have you lost your mind?!"
- The cold wall pressed against her back, causing discomfort in her stomach to surge again.
- She looked at his furious face and couldn't help but find it ridiculous. "So, what if it was me? You dare to cheat on me, but you're afraid of others finding out?"
- "You must be out of your mind!"
- He raised his hand to strike, but he hesitated in midair. He then switched to hurling more vicious curses.
- "You are a useless waste, causing trouble for me. What else can you do? If it weren't for your initial usefulness, I would have fired you long ago!"
- The words "useless waste" felt like poisoned needles stabbing into Audrey’s heart.
- But before she could respond, a sharp pain shot through her abdomen, making her clutch her stomach and fall on her knees. She then vomited a mouthful of sweet blood, splattering it on the pristine floor and creating a horrifying sight.
- Jasper's curses abruptly stopped.
- He stared at the blood on her lips and the stain on the floor, his pupils contracting, his furious expression frozen.
- "What... What's wrong with you?"
- Audrey tried to speak, but another mouthful of blood gushed out, and her vision began to blur.
- In a daze, she saw him frantically dialing for emergency help on his phone. His voice was trembling when he said, "Quick! Send us help! My wife is vomiting blood!"
- When Audrey woke up again, she was lying in the ICU.
- She was covered in tubes, feeling heavy and weak with every breath.
- Simon stood by the bedside, looking at her with a serious expression. "Audrey, hang in there. We're still figuring things out."
- She struggled to see as she looked towards the door.
- Jasper was standing there. His suit was wrinkled. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were filled with shock and confusion. There was no trace of his former arrogance.
- Later, Audrey found out that Simon had already told him the truth about her advanced pancreatic cancer.
- Taking advantage of Jasper stepping out to answer a phone call, Audrey grabbed Simon's hand with all her strength and said in a weak but firm voice, "Simon... Help me contact... the organ coordinator of the Red Cross... I want... to go into standby mode..."
- Simon's eyes turned red as he nodded. "Don't worry. I'll take care of it."
- As he turned to leave, Audrey called out to him again. "Don't let... Jasper know..."
- After saying this, she completely lost consciousness.
- In the last moment before passing out, she seemed to see Jasper standing outside the room, looking at her through the glass window.
- For the first time, a look of regret appeared on his face.
- CHAPTER SEVEN
- After three days in the ICU, Audrey was transferred to the VIP suite.
- She was so weak, like a puddle of water, she couldn't even lift her hand, relying on painkillers and nutrients to keep her alive.
- Jasper stayed by her bedside almost every day, the red blood vessels in his eyes clearly visible.
- He wasn't as cold as before. There was a hint of indescribable emotion in his eyes when he looked at her.
- "Audrey, do you remember when we first started our business?"
- He sat by the bed, speaking softly as if he was afraid to disturb her.
- "At that time, we squeezed into a ten-square-meter rental house with no heating for winter. You were wrapped in a blanket, helping me revise the business plan, and your hands were so red from the cold, but you wouldn't stop. And then on your birthday, I didn't have money to buy a gift, so I made a cake out of cardboard, but you laughed so happily, saying it was the best gift you ever received."
- He rambled on about the past, full of regret in his tone.
- "It's all my fault. I got too busy later on. I neglected you and did things that hurt you. Can you give me another chance? When you get better, let's start over."
- Audrey listened with her eyes closed, feeling nothing but irony.
- These memories that he had long forgotten were now being used as tools for his "repentance."
- After a while, Audrey slowly opened her eyes and stared blankly at the ceiling. Her voice was weak but clear as she said, "Is Vanessa's child... okay?"
- Jasper's voice suddenly stopped, his grip on her hand tightening instantly.
- The "affection" on his face froze, and his color drained away, leaving him pale.
- He opened his mouth but couldn't say a word, only awkwardly avoiding Audrey’s gaze.
- Watching his flustered state, a faint and fleeting smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
- In the afternoon, Simon came to check on her. Jasper hurriedly approached him, his voice urgent as he said, "Simon, how is she doing? When will she get better?"
- Simon sighed and replied with a grim voice, "Jasper, you need to be prepared. Audrey's condition has reached a critical stage. She could be in danger at any moment. All we can do is try to alleviate her pain."
- Jasper's body swayed, as if he couldn't stand steadily. His disbelief was clear in his eyes. "How... You said the surgery was successful, didn't you?"
- "That was just to relieve symptoms. It was not a cure." Simon shook his head. "The Red Cross organ coordinator is already on standby at the hospital. If there is an emergency, they will intervene immediately."
- Jasper was puzzled. "Coordinator? What coordinator?"
- "Just a routine plan for critically ill patients, to ensure timely response to emergencies."
- Simon didn't say much, following Audrey’s instructions and never mentioning the organ donation.
- Jasper didn't ask any more questions, but the panic on his face worsened.
- He sat in a chair in the corner of the room with his hands in his hair, exuding a sense of confusion and panic.
- Audrey turned her head and watched the sunset outside the window slowly sinking, dyeing half the sky red.
- The smell of death was getting closer, but she was unusually calm.
- When the nurse came in to change the IV drip, she said softly, "Mr. Goldland, you've been here for several days. Go back and rest. We’ll be here for Mrs. Goldland.”
- Jasper shook his head and said with a hoarse voice, "I'm not going back. I'll stay here with her."
