• I froze, my heart thudding painfully. I knew what I should say, the safe answer, the one that would end this conversation. My gaze flicked to the field again, to where Kai was bent over, hands on his knees, chest heaving. I looked away quickly, my lips trembling before I forced them into a faint smile.
• “Uhm… yeah,” I said, my voice softer than I meant it to be. “He was just angry that Luke touched me when it’s against the rules. And as the alpha’s son, it’s kind of his responsibility to make sure all the rules are followed. That’s all it was.”
