Chapter 6

  • After I called him out, Miles’s face went stiff.
  • “I’m the one who told Miles,” Selene covered for him, smug as hell. “We’re allowing you to have the baby. It’s the Alpha’s bloodline, after all.”
  • Miles pulled himself together. “Selene’s right. I let you go last time so you could cool off. This time you’re coming back to Stone Pack with us.”
  • He turned to the guards walking up. “Get this lowly Omega downstairs and lock her up.”
  • Before I could speak, a man stepped out from behind the guards.
  • His presence alone shut Miles and Selene up.
  • He was tall and built, with short black hair, warm green eyes, bronze skin—he looked damn good.
  • He gave me a teasing smile. “Caroline, looks like you’re in a bit of trouble.”
  • It clicked.
  • My ex-fiancé—the one I broke the engagement with—Alpha Damian.
  • “Another Alpha?” Selene blurted, shocked and jealous. “Caroline, even pregnant, you still won’t behave. Have you no shame?”
  • Miles lunged for me, ready to drag me off.
  • But one look from Alpha Damian made the guards close in on Miles.
  • Under everyone’s stunned stare, Miles and Selene got shoved out the door. Every last Stone Pack wolf got tossed out with them.
  • On his way out, Miles looked like he’d swallowed a dozen flies.
  • Just the hint that I had some influence already had him squirming.
  • Once he finally realized what I gave up for us...
  • He'd probably want to rip his own heart out.
  • I turned away and didn’t spare them another glance.
  • Damian caught up, voice dripping with sarcasm. “You dumped me and chose a wolf like that?”
  • I didn’t back down. “What about you? You won’t mark anyone because you don’t even have the guts to choose?”
  • His face went serious. “I’m waiting for someone who matters. That’s it.”
  • For a moment, I saw myself in Damian.
  • That blind crush. That stubborn devotion to Miles.
  • Clearly, Damian had someone like that carved into his heart too.
  • Rank be damned. All you could want was the real thing.
  • “Caroline, what happened?”
  • I saw my family coming over.
  • Mom spotted Damian first, delighted. “Damian, looks like you already found Caroline.”
  • Even my strict dad cracked a joke. “Damian’s not a bad match for our daughter.”
  • Carlos stepped up and socked Damian in the shoulder. “Planning to stop with the secret crush?”
  • A secret crush?
  • What Carlos had said floored me.
  • Either way, I had to shoot down my family’s attempts to set me up with Damian.
  • Damian spoke over Mindlink. “I know you don’t want to take a second mate yet. How about we help each other and keep our families off our backs for now?”
  • I was a little surprised. I didn’t expect Damian to be this childish.
  • But remembering he was waiting for someone, I kind of got it.
  • Love made fools of us all, even Alphas.
  • “Fine," I agreed over the mind link.
  • It was my first party since coming back, and plenty of male wolves asked me to dance.
  • Damian was one of them.
  • But I picked no one. I walked to my brother Carlos.
  • As we danced, I asked, “Who is Damian secretly in love with?”
  • Carlos gave me a knowing smile. “You’ll figure it out.”
  • The party was a blast. I started to feel like the Alpha’s daughter again—head held high.
  • The next morning, a phone call yanked me out of sleep.
  • Miles’s voice came through, rough and hoarse.
  • “Where are you? I sent you so many messages, called a hundred times. And you didn’t answer once?”
  • Back then, I was the one blowing up his phone.
  • He only replied when he got annoyed enough.
  • Now that I was ignoring him, he became desperate for my attention.
  • I said calmly, “Miles, I don’t owe you anything. We’re done.”
  • Miles snapped, “Don’t forget you’re carrying my pup!”
