Chapter 5

  • I didn’t answer.
  • We’d been married five years, and Miles never knew who I really was.
  • If he’d paid even a little attention, he would’ve noticed my last name—Hearst—the same as the Alpha family of the strongest pack, Silver Moon.
  • Selene raised her voice, spitting venom. “Caroline, no wonder you dared come back and stir shit up. You already hooked up with an Alpha wolf! You’re shameless!”
  • “Right…” Miles blinked like he’d just woken up. “Caroline can’t be from an Alpha family. She must’ve cheated…”
  • Carlos couldn’t stand these two clowns.
  • An Alpha command snapped from his lips. “Silence.”
  • Selene’s voice cut off mid-sentence. She stared, terrified, like a hen with its neck grabbed.
  • My brother shielded me as we left. No one dared challenge an Alpha’s pressure. Not even Miles.
  • We got into his Maybach, and Miles still chased after us.
  • He couldn’t talk, but his face said plenty. His eyes were practically glued to the car, like he wanted to stick to it and get dragged along.
  • I went back to Silver Moon.
  • Everything was the same as before. I was still Mom and Dad’s darling little princess.
  • “We’re going to announce to the whole werewolf world that our precious girl is home. And we’ll pick you the best second-chance mate,” Mom murmured, hugging me tight.
  • The next day, Silver Moon threw a massive party and invited all the high-ranking wolves from every pack.
  • I wasn’t in the mood to socialize, so Carlos stayed with me in the second floor.
  • Out of nowhere he said, “Your ex-fiancé, Alpha Damian—he hasn’t marked anyone yet.”
  • I shook my head. “I don’t want Damian to accept me just because Silver Moon is powerful.”
  • I’d lost a pup, and I’d rejected my mate.
  • Any Alpha would care about that. I didn’t think Damian would be any different.
  • Besides, I was the one who broke off the engagement with him.
  • Carlos went to meet a few Alphas from other packs, and I headed downstairs alone to get some air.
  • Just my luck. On the stairs, I ran right into Selene and Miles.
  • Selene was nestled in Miles’s arms, beaming.
  • I planned to pretend I didn’t see them.
  • But Miles stepped in front of me, scowling. “Caroline, I don’t care how you snuck in. Get out now. This isn’t a party for low-level wolves.”
  • “Then what are you two doing here?”
  • I almost laughed. Carlos definitely hadn’t invited them.
  • How thick-skinned could they be?
  • Selene clung to Miles, chin high. “The Alpha’s daughter of Silver Moon is back. We came to bring a gift.”
  • A gift for me?
  • I could barely contain my laughter. “You walking out right now would be the best gift.”
  • I couldn’t be bothered with them. I pinged the guards through Mindlink and told them to throw these two out.
  • Just then, a maid came over with my meds and a glass of water, reminding me it was time to take my pills.
  • After the surgery, I’d gone back to the hospital for a checkup.
  • Because I’d been on magic potions for a long time and had an early miscarriage, the doctor prescribed meds for me to take on schedule.
  • I was about to take them when Miles lunged in and slapped the cup and pills to the floor.
  • His face twisted. “Caroline, you’re so damn selfish. How dare you take so much meds! Do you know this could hurt our pup?”
  • I let out a cold laugh. “So you do remember, Miles?”
