Chapter 9 An In-depth Conversation

  • Hayley was struck dumb.
  • About Mrs. Kane getting driven out of the house, Hayley heard that it was all because of Summer, but she didn’t know the reason.
  • So it was Mrs. Kane who insulted her?
  • She pursed her lips. If I knew the reason, I wouldn’t have brought this up in the first place!
  • Chuckling, Christian tried to ease the situation. “Wyatt, you’re a real man. After all, Summer is considered the daughter-in-law of the Malcolm Family. There’s no way we will allow a maid servant to insult her!”
  • With a snort, Hayley didn’t utter a word as she knew she had lost out.
  • At the right timing, Wayne showed his kind concern toward Summer.
  • Just then, Christian’s phone rang. Casting a glance at the number, his face blanched. “I need to pick up a call. You guys go ahead without me.”
  • In a frosty manner, Wyatt said, “Take care, Uncle Christian.”
  • After Christian left, Winston came walking in loutishly.
  • Taking a gander around the living hall, Winston sat at the opposite of Summer and made faces at her.
  • Noticing the lecherous look on his face, Wayne reminded, “She’s your cousin-in-law!”
  • “I know that,” said Winston as he winked at Summer. “I met them at the entrance just now, and we even shared an in-depth conversation.”
  • Upon hearing that he deliberately emphasized on the word ‘in-depth conversation,’ Summer frowned in dismay.
  • When she saw the maid servants busy preparing dinner, Summer stood up. “I’ll help out in the kitchen,” she offered.
  • With Winston sitting opposite her, she simply couldn’t stand the sight of him.
  • However, after she had taken two small steps, her wrist was held by a strong hand. “There are a lot of maid servants here in Grandpa’s mansion, so there’s no need for you to help.”
  • “He’s right.” Hayley giggled sarcastically. “Everyone knows that you’re from the countryside and are used to working all day. But there’s a lot of maid servants here, so you can just sit around and act like a proper Madam.”
  • With her face turned pale, Summer had no other choice but to sit back down.
  • As soon as she sat down, the sounds of a commotion could be heard from outside the mansion.
  • “Old Mr. Malcolm…” cried the butler as he ran in hurriedly and stole a quick peek at Winston who was eating fruits in a sloppy manner.
  • “What’s wrong?” asked Wayne, and he didn’t sound pleased.
  • “Mr. Donald Ainsley came together with his daughter, Miss Zadie Ainsley. They are here to demand an explanation,” reported the butler fretfully. “They said that a few days ago, Young Master Winston was disrespectful toward Miss Ainsley…”
  • Darting a glare at Winston, Wayne questioned, “What happened?”
  • As though he was not bothered by the commotion, Winston continued to munch on the fruits. “They are just making a big fuss. The other day at the clubhouse, I was a little tipsy and gave Zadie a little pinch on the butt. What’s the big deal?”
  • Instantly, the atmosphere in the living hall turned as silent as the grave.
  • In the next few seconds, Wayne picked up the ashtray and threw it directly at Winston. “You b*stard! How is that not a big deal?”
  • The Ainsley Family was considered one of the reputable families in Blackburn City. If this news was to spread, the Malcolm Family’s image would surely be tarnished.
  • In a split second, Winston managed to evade the ashtray, so it didn’t hit him, but the ashes within the tray did land on him.
  • Hence, he had ash covered all over his face and fancy suit.
  • “Grandpa, what’s the big fuss?” Curling his lips in grimace, Winston argued, “You can’t blame me for it! That night, Zadie was wearing a really short dress to the clubhouse. Her undies were about to show when she was sitting right next to me. Wasn’t it obvious that she was trying to seduce me? All I did was return the favor by giving her a light pinch.”
  • Feeling his anger spiked, Wayne grabbed a pillow from the side and aimed it right at him.
  • With that, Wyatt, who was quiet all along, spoke up. “Winston, you’re no longer young. Since the Ainsley Family are here to ask for an explanation, shouldn’t you go out and settle your own problems? Or are you going to wait for Grandpa to settle things for you?”
  • Rolling his eyes at Wyatt, Winston snapped, “If I go out this instance, the Ainsleys will definitely beat me up.”
  • In a calm manner, Wyatt said, “I see. I didn’t know that you’re the type that refuses to bear your own responsibility. If I recall correctly, I think Grandpa has entrusted you to take charge of one of our subsidiary companies as CEO. For such a trivial matter, are you going to hide behind Grandpa’s back? If the shareholders find out about this, I bet you won’t be able to keep your position for long.”
  • Hearing that, Winston realized he couldn’t possibly back off now, even if he wanted to.
  • Pulling Winston up with her, Hayley rose from her seat. “Quit your sarcasm! This is nothing but a trivial matter. Winston can handle it easily.”
  • Frowning, Summer looked toward Hayley, who was tugging Winston away with her.
  • Winston clearly doesn’t know what he had done wrong. Will it be alright if he goes out now? she thought as she gazed at the man beside her, who was gracefully drinking tea.
  • Gesturing for the butler to come forward, Wayne whispered in his ears.
  • Once the butler left, Wayne looked toward Wyatt and sneered. “The Ainsleys won’t let this off easily, and Winston clearly didn’t feel sorry at all. With that IQ of yours, I’m sure you realize that he will only make matters worse.”
  • Just when Wayne had spoken, they could hear the argument heightened at the entrance.
  • Sure enough, Summer could hear Winston yelling at Zadie and thought, Without a doubt, it has gotten... worse.
  • “Both of you can leave through the backdoor. I’ll take it as if you didn’t come over today!”
  • Darting Wyatt a cold stare, Wayne stood up as rage stirred within him. “Considering that you’re young and not well physically, I will overlook this provocation. No more next time!” thundered Wayne as he stormed off in a huff.
  • With the corner of his mouth quirked up, Wyatt remained seated in the wheelchair.
  • Obeying Wayne’s order, Summer asked a maid servant for directions and left together with Wyatt.
  • From where they were standing, they could still hear their dispute intensified.
  • Initially, Summer thought it wouldn’t be that difficult to get to the backdoor.
  • However, with the complicated and winding pathways, as well as the various flowers, she found herself completely lost.
  • “I think I’m lost,” said Summer in despair. Staring at the stone pathway which she had passed by at least 10 times, she sighed, feeling helpless. “I should’ve asked a maid servant to lead the way.”
  • “I don’t think anyone will help you.”
  • Pressing her lips together, Summer asked, “How come? Isn’t this Grandpa’s house? And you’re his grandson!”
  • With that, Wyatt gave a lopsided smile. “I guess you don’t know much about your own husband.”
  • “One of the most well-known people in the whole of Blackburn City—Wyatt Malcolm, known for bringing bad luck to the people around him. At the age of 9, his parents passed away. When he was 13, due to his mischievous acts, he started a fire by accident, which killed his birth sister, along with the two maid servants who took care of him. He himself also lost his vision and crippled one of his legs.”
  • “For fear of his bad luck, the Malcolm Family dared not live near him. Hence, he was cast out of the Malcolm Mansion to live on his own. Now, he has been living in Malcolm Villa for 13 years.”
  • Shocked, Summer’s jaw dropped, as she found it hard to believe that Wyatt had been living on his own in the villa for 13 years.
  • In a voice that sounded somewhat lonesome but prideful at the same time, the man said, “For 13 years, I’m only allowed to come back to the Malcolm Mansion during the festive season for a meal. Today, the reason why you and I are allowed to come by is because we just got married yesterday.”
  • Plastering a grin on his face, he said, “The maid servants here simply won’t have any respect for the person who was driven out of this house.”
