Chapter 5 Come Home to Eat With Me

  • Regaining her composure, Summer hurriedly picked up her cell phone and flashed him a smile. “Jake, you’re working here?”
  • A smile spread across his dashing face and he reached out his hand to stroke her head adoringly. “You’re still so careless. How old are you now?”
  • “I’m already twenty years old,” she replied earnestly with a twinkle in her eyes.
  • Chuckling lightly, he said, “What brought you here to the hospital?”
  • Pointing to the room behind her, she answered, “My friend is chatting with her cousin in there.”
  • Jake took a quick glance at the time. “It’s lunchtime and it might take some time for your friend to be out. I’m going for lunch now, so should I buy you lunch as well?”
  • After a short moment of contemplation, she knocked on the door and informed Harper, “I’m going now.”
  • With a faint chuckle, Jake walked ahead and Summer tagged after him silently.
  • It all started in her second year of high school when her admiration for Jake grew. That year, her grandmother fell ill and fainted suddenly when she came to visit her at school. Back then, it was Jake who dashed forward to give first-aid to her and carried her all the way to the nearest hospital.
  • It was sunny that day when they stood in the hospital hallway and he told her that he was a medical student. Not only that, he even shared with her the knowledge on caring for her grandmother.
  • That was the first time ever when she was interested in a guy, and it was also the motivating factor for her to enroll into a medical school later. She did that so that she could attend the same school as him and walk the path he had taken. Despite that, she didn’t have the courage to look for him when that wish came true.
  • The last time she met Jake was when she was in her last year of high school. That time, he gave her words of encouragement.
  • Leading her into a small, clean eatery, he asked, “What would you like to eat?” Without his white robe, Jake looked even more good-looking as he flipped through the menu. “If I remember correctly, you like sweet food, don’t you?”
  • “Yeah,” Summer muttered shakily. It had been such a long time since they last met, and she was so nervous that her voice was trembling.
  • Suddenly, her cell phone rang. It was an unknown number calling her. Excusing herself, she then picked up the call.
  • “Where are you?”
  • The cold and indifferent voice over the phone sounded a little familiar to her, and her brows were furrowed. “You’re...”
  • “Wyatt.”
  • “How did you get my number?!” she exclaimed in shock.
  • “Is that so shocking?” His indifferent voice traveled through the call and into her ears. “Come home and eat with me.”
  • “……”
  • Dumbstruck, she cast an awkward look at Jake, who was still studying the menu in front of her. “May I… go home a little later?”
  • She couldn’t leave right after taking her seat when the senior she hadn’t met in a long while had offered to buy her lunch.
  • The other end of the line was silent for a few seconds before he said, “Ten minutes.”
  • “Okay.”
  • “Is that your boyfriend?” Jake asked with a smile after she hung up.
  • “That’s not my boyfriend.” Shaking her head in embarrassment, she added, “He’s my husband.”
  • The smile on his face froze and it took him a while before he chuckled in a self-deprecating manner. “You’re married at such a young age? When did that happen?”
  • “Just… yesterday.”
  • The self-deprecating look in his eyes deepened and he cleared his throat. “I don’t even have a gift for your wedding, so take this meal as my blessing to you!” he said and called for the waiter to take his order.
  • “That’s alright.” She stopped him hurriedly. “I’m leaving after this drink. My husband is asking me to go home to eat with him.”
  • Jake looked crestfallen. A few seconds later, he sighed. “How long have you been together with him?”
  • How long have we been together? Summer pondered on this question carefully and came up with an answer. We’ve been together for… twenty-six hours?
  • But of course, she wouldn’t tell him the truth. Hence, she lied by telling him, “A little more than two months.”
  • Grinning, Jake said, “That’s a very short time. Was it love at first sight?”
  • Raising the glass to her lips, she took a sip of water and answered somewhat guiltily, “Yeah, it was love at first sight.”
  • When her lips touched the warm water, it inexplicably reminded her of the kiss on the previous day.
  • Wyatt’s lips looked defined and firm, but it felt soft and warm when kissed…
  • She blushed, and Jake thought it was because she was reminded of her lover. Hence, his face paled even further.
  • “Summer!” Just as both of them were silent, Harper barged in and cried out, “Your husband’s driver is waiting for you outside. Do you want to chat a little more here?”
  • Taking a quick look at the time, Summer saw that exactly ten minutes had passed since Wyatt’s call, so she stood up. “Let’s catch up when we’re free next time,” she said, giving him an apologetic look.
  • Nodding, he said, “Be careful on your way.”
  • Sitting next to the eatery window, Jake watched as the other girl dragged Summer into a black BMW parked at the side of the road with a delighted look on her face.
  • The edges of his lips curled upward into a bitter smile. Looks like she’s living happily now.
  • “Summer, these are the prescriptions my cousin specially prepared to treat your husband’s eyes!”
  • The moment they got into the car, Harper stuffed a few bottles of medications into her backpack. “Handicapped people have especially low self-esteem, and he’ll think that you despise him if you tell him these are to treat his eyes. So just tell him these are supplements for his health! I’ve already removed the description booklet and labels, and I’ve written the dosage and timings on a separate piece of paper.”
  • “Thanks.”
  • Right now, Summer was still upset that she wasn’t able to speak much with Jake. With her heart all over the place, she was not in the mood to ask about the effects of the medications.
  • After Emmanuel dropped Harper off at the school gates, he then sent Summer back to the villa.
  • In the huge and quiet villa, Wyatt sat alone at the dining table. The midday sun elongated his shadow, casting an inexplicable sense of loneliness about him.
  • When she returned, she immediately went to take a seat after washing her hands. Her eyes widened at the luxurious spread across the table after she sat down. “Are we expecting guests?”
  • “No,” the man with the black cloth covering his eyes answered calmly. “Just the two of us.”
  • Summer was so startled that she almost couldn’t speak. “But… we can’t finish this!”
  • “That’s true.” Picking up his fork slowly, he added, “I even instructed the kitchen staff to add a few more dishes.”
  • “Why?”
  • The fork in his hand stopped midair and he smirked. “Just in case on the second day of marriage, Mrs. Malcolm would be having her meal in a small eatery with another man. Others might think that I’m mistreating you.”
  • Dumbstruck, she finally uttered, “Did… Did you already know that I was at the eatery earlier?”
  • Continuing to eat calmly, Wyatt said, “So it seems like you really went to a restaurant with another man.”
  • Summer was speechless as she thought, Did he really take me for an idiot? Of course I understood the underlying meaning behind his words, and I hate it the most when someone beats about the bush with me!
  • Taking a deep breath, she explained, “I don’t dislike the food at home, and neither am I unwilling to come back to eat. It’s just that I happened to meet an old acquaintance at the hospital.”
  • With raised eyebrows, Wyatt asked, “Why did you go to the hospital?”
  • In response, she stood up and rummaged through her backpack. After arranging the prescription bottles into a neat row in front of him, she told him, “I went to get you supplements because your body is weak.”
